‘Cloverfield’ Director Sinks His Teeth Into Vampire Film

According to Variety, “Cloverfield” director Matt Reeves will write and direct the vampire tale “Let the Right One In” for Overture Films and Hammer Films. The film, a remake of Tomas Alfredson’s Swedish film “Lat Den Ratte Komma In” based on a novel by Swedish author John Ajvide Lindqvist, centers on a young boy who befriends a female neighbor who moves to town. Hammer acquired remake rights at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival. where the film won the Founders Award for narrative feature. Overture is planning to release the remake next year. “Let the Right One In” will be produced by Hammer’s Simon Oakes. Spitfire’s Guy East and Nigel Sinclair and Swedish producers John Nordling and Carl Molinder. Spitfire’s Alex Brunner and Tobin Armbrust will exec produce along with John Ptak, Philip Elway and Fredrik Malmberg. Reeves is in pre production on “Invisible Woman,” a dramatic thriller probing the mind of a desperate housewife who turns to a life of crime. His directing credits include “The Pallbearer” and the TV skein “Felicity"; he wrote “The Yards” and co-created and exec produced “Felicity.” ...

First up, there's a whole new buddy comedy on the way from the writers of Harold & Kumar -- Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg . The Hollywood Reporter posts that the duo have whipped up a new pic called 'Til Beth Do Us Part . Like H&K, the film will focus on two twenty-something guys, but instead of focusing on the great high, it's about how a friendship is put to the test once one of them gets engaged. I bet you anything this came from those Amsterdam-set follow-ups on the Guantanamo Bay DVD. We should hear more soon -- the plan is to get this comedy in production by early next year. But there's also White Dad , according to THR . This spec, which comes from writer Alan Yang, is being kept completely under wraps. It shouldn't be too hard to make some possible guesses. The writer is a Yang, and it's about white dads, so maybe it's about a Chinese kid adopted by a white family? Stay tuned! And finally, there's Matt Reeves . THR reports the Cloverfield director is going to write and direct a remake of the Swedish horror film Let the Right One In. The premise of this flick would've sent my teen penchant for vampires into overdrive -- "a bullied boy whose desire for revenge becomes intertwined with his growing love for a girl who happens to be a vampire." October horror movie picks: 'Cloverfield'

Each day, I'll be counting down the time to Halloween with a look at some (fairly recent) horror movies out on DVD so you can get your fear fix. "Cloverfield" 3 stars "Cloverfield" is a gratifying thriller despite, or maybe because of, its lack of exposition. We never learn why a 50-story alien-like creature starts tearing down buildings and munching up people in Manhattan, or where it comes from. The exposition isn't really necessary although there's a fervent online bunch who want to create the monster's mythology, perhaps in deference to the mythology king, producer J.J. Abrams. "Cloverfield" is inevitably being compared to "The Blair Witch Project" in that it's all shot using hand-held video cameras, which means if you have a problem with shaky cam all the time, this might not be the movie for you. The setup is a going-away party for Rob -- he's going to Japan, a little sly wink on the Godzilla front -- and his best friend Hud is busy videotaping testimonials from Rob's brother, Jason; Jason's girlfriend, Lily; a friend of a friend, Marlena; and Beth, whom Rob is in love with, but hasn't found the courage to tell. ...
