From NBC's Ron Allen There was a very interesting discussion on the flight back to D.C. from Indianapolis. By the time we landed, the Clinton campaign was proclaiming, "We shocked the world" by winning Indiana. "A win is a win," was the rallying cry, as the margin narrowed. Meanwhile, the Clinton press team did everything possible to minimize Barack Obama 's win in North Carolina. He has a "built-in advantage" there, they said. It was a state where they knew the "demographics" were going to be tough, referring the state’s African-American community. Turns out, his margin overall was greater than her's in Pennsylvania.   But Clinton's aides continue to argue she's the stronger nominee, because she continues to do well with the most important voters, crucial swing voters, who will make the difference in a race with John McCain in November, blue-collar and working-class voters, most of whom are white. But how does a candidate claim to be the strongest and most electable nominee, when that candidate has very little support with some of the Democratic Party's most loyal followers, African-American voters? Wouldn't it be fair to say that ignoring that "demographic" tends to marginalize the significance of those voters, who also historically have felt somewhat taken for granted by Democrats? ...( read more ) ...

Hillary Rodham Clinton vowed Wednesday to continue her quest for the Democratic nomination, arguing she would be the stronger nominee because she appeals to a wider coalition of voters -- including whites who have not supported Barack Obama in recent contests. "I have a much broader base to build a winning coalition on," she said in an interview with USA TODAY. As evidence, Clinton cited an Associated Press article "that found how Sen. Obama's support among working, hard-working Americans, white Americans, is weakening again, and how whites in both states who had not completed college were supporting me." ...

Anyone who has read my many pro-Obama essays on the Huffington Post knows that I believe that Senator Obama will make a great president. They also know that I've been less than kind to Senator Clinton. Clinton's supporters have responded with their comments. Those of us who voted for Obama and who are still working hard to get him nominated, have done so because we believe in the truthfulness and decency of his character, the sincerity of his words, the power of his compassion and intellect and have been inspired by his call to move beyond politics-as-usual in order to save our country from the aftermath of Bush, war, greed and stupidity. Now--and I'm including myself here--it's time to act as if we actually believe in what Senator Obama has been saying and act upon his inspiring vision. As the nominating process plays out it's time to stop vilifying Senator Clinton. America needs her. America needs her supporters. We Obama and Clinton supporters are like kid brothers squabbling in the living room over the TV remote while a predator is breaking into the house. The squabble is petty compared to the real fight ahead. Let all sane Americans concentrate on saving our country from the looming disaster of a Bush/McCain presidency. Note: I say this as a former lifelong Republican and someone who, in 2000, worked hard for McCain when he was running against Bush. I went on numerous conservative talk stations--at the request ...

On the Thursday before the Pennsylvania primary, Bill Clinton spoke to a crowd of college students at a gymnasium in Lock Haven. The event was typical of the stops--forty-seven of them--that the former President had made in the state during the seven weeks leading up to the vote. Lock Haven is a small town (pop. 9,000), hours away from Pittsburgh or Philadelphia, and the crowd was modest (half the gym's floor space was empty). Within the campaign, Clinton's enthusiasm for rustling votes in these remote corners was a source of amusement. When I asked what he was doing on Election Day, a Clinton campaign adviser said, "I think he's leading a caravan of Wal-Mart greeters to the polls."... When Hillary Clinton's Presidential campaign was launched, in January, 2007, her supporters feared that Bill would overshadow her, as he had when they both spoke at the funeral of Coretta Scott King, a year earlier. Now the constant fear is that he will embarrass her. When he makes news, it is rarely a good day for his spouse. Whether he was publicly comparing Barack Obama's primary victory in South Carolina to Jesse Jackson's campaigns in the eighties or privately, and apoplectically, complaining that Bill Richardson broke his word by endorsing Obama, every story has seemed to reinforce an image of Clinton as a sort of ill-tempered coot driven a little mad by Obama's success. "I think this campaign has enraged him," the adviser told me. "He does ...

"Yes we can" - Barack Obama slogan "Yes she can" - adaptation of Obama slogan used by Hillary Clinton supporters during her victory speech last night in Pennsylvania There's nothing wrong with borrowing or even mocking an opponent's slogan. It is politics after all. It's not as nice when the candidate does it, but the actual supporters, well, it's a free country. But it did get me thinking about one vs. many. Clinton supporters talk about the aura of Obama. Clinton spoke of a speech. They focus on "well, Obama is a symbol, he personifies what people are feeling. There isn't much there there." But in watching Hillary speak last night and then Barack speak, I think the parallel is the complete opposite: Clinton is the personification and Barack is the one who steps back. Yep, Hillary won Pennsylvania last night, keeping the drawn out Democratic nomination still alive, and giving Drudge reason to use red fonts. Kathy Kiely and Jill Lawrence reported recently at USA Today that Hillary Rodham Clinton made these "blunt remarks about race" in an interview when asked how she could win the Democratic nomination. "I have a much broader base to build a winning coalition on," she said in an interview with USA TODAY. As evidence, Clinton cited an Associated Press article "that found how Sen. Obama's support among working, hard-working Americans, white Americans, is weakening again, and how whites in both states who had not completed college were supporting me." "There's a pattern emerging here," she said. Not surprisingly, Senator Clinton's comments have generated a firestorm of blog, pundit and op-ed commentary. Clinton has not apologized for nor retracted her remarks, and later: Clinton rejected any idea that her emphasis on white voters could be interpreted as racially divisive. "These are the people you have to win if you're a Democrat in sufficient numbers to actually win the election. Everybody knows that." Unfortunately, Clinton's assertion is difficult to prove with evidence rather than conjecture, was interpreted widely as racially divisive and is part of a pattern of remarks from her, her husband and her campaign which have led her to lose support from a key Democratic party voting block that she has gained versus Barack Obama. At Jack and Jill Politics, dnA posts data which indicates both that Clinton's c ...
