Filed under: Democrats , Barack Obama , 2008 President , Media Politico has a story today about the influence of internet innovator and journalism lightning-rod Matt Drudge that includes this ominous admission: "It's clear to us that Barack Obama has won the Drudge Primary, and it's one of the most important primaries in this process," conceded a senior Clinton Aide, who also acknowledged that Drudge's treatment of Obama could also make the Illinois senator more electable in November. The piece goes on to explain that Drudge has also had John McCain in the crosshairs, so it isn't just an anti-Clinton thing. This is undeniably good news for Obama, as long as this holds. Matt Drudge is, for better or worse, the most influential man in political journalism. I say it's for worse. As luck would have it, I already had Drudge on my mind. I was all ready to do a story about the single biggest turning point of this campaign, instigated by Drudge, when the RFK remarks story broke. That story was also promoted by Drudge. The Drudge Report is like a watercooler that almost all political reporters gather around to find out what's hot. Whether they like him or not, ignoring him is not an option. Nobody wants to be the only one to miss the bus on the sexy new story. Politico quotes a Romney Aide calling Drudge "an assignment editor for the national press corps." This is a scary concept. Even if you like and trust him, that is too much power for ...

Hillary Clinton today sought to distance herself from all the clamor that she has set her sights on claiming the second spot on the Democratic presidential ticket. A terse statement sent out by one of her top aides, Phil Singer , on behalf of the currently out-of-sight and soon-to-be ex-White House candidate had this to say: "While Senator Clinton has made clear throughout this process that she will do whatever she can to elect a Democrat to the White House, she is not seeking the vice presidency, and no one speaks for her but her.  The choice here is Senator Obama's and his alone." Speculation about Clinton's interest in the veep spot -- and whether she is lobbying for it -- has been especially fast and furious since Tuesday afternoon, when it was learned she had told fellow lawmakers from New York that she was "open" to the possibility. But that evening, in the view of many, she stomped on her chances -- whatever they may have been up to that point -- in giving a speech that dwelled on her own campaign, only briefly mentioned Barack Obama and made no acknowledgment that he had laid claim to the delegates needed to secure the ticket's top spot. Perhaps the conventional wisdom was summed up best in a column today by E.J. Dionne Jr ., which began: "Hillary Clinton talked her way out of the vice presidency on Tuesday night." -- Don Frederick ...

As chief executive of Hewlett-Packard from 1999 to 2005, Carly Fiorina was the most powerful woman in corporate America. She also became one of the most celebrated and criticized when she was fired from that job in February 2005 in a battle with Hewlett's board--and with tech venture capitalist Tom Perkins in particular--after a controversial merger with Compaq Computer. (She recounted that corporate melodrama in her bestselling memoir Tough Choices.) Now, at a mere 53, Fiorina is polishing her distinguished résumé with a heavy dose of political activism. She is a top presidential campaign surrogate for presumptive Republican nominee John McCain and chairman of Victory '08, the Republican National Committee's fundraising and get-out-the-vote arm. ...

A top Aide to US presidential hopeful Senator Barack Obama has let slip that the Democratic contender is sincere about considering former rival Senator Hillary Clinton for a spot on the ticket, saying she was on the "shortlist" for the job of running mate. After a sometimes acrimonious Democratic primary, which saw both sides question the other's fitness to govern, a joint rally held at the appropriately-named Unity, New Hampshire last Friday, has pundits suggesting Sen. Clinton is once again in the running for the all-important vice-presidential nominee slot. Speaking on Australian television, Sen. Obama's campaign co-chairman Tom Daschle appeared to confirm this saying Sen. Clinton would be on "anybody's short list". "I think he needs two things, first somebody who can become president in the case of a tragedy and secondly, somebody with whom he can work closely," he said to the ABC's Insiders program. "I think Hillary Clinton would be, as Barack Obama has said, on anyone's short list and I think that is sincere. "I think he is looking at Hillary and a host of other possibilities for the future." ...
