In a rare moment of criticism, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton condemned Israels announcement on Friday to continue with construction in the disputed territory of East Jerusalem, calling it insulting. According to CNN.com, Israel plans to build 1,600 housing units in the Ramat Shlomo neighborhood of East Jerusalem. The Israeli Interior Ministry denies the status of the territory as East Jerusalem. In a week that saw Vice President Joe Biden travel to Israel speaking with President Shimon Peres and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to discuss Israeli-Palestinian relations, among other things, Clinton was disappointed by the announcement. "I mean, it was just really a very unfortunate and difficult moment for everyone the United States, our vice president who had gone to reassert our strong support for Israeli security and I regret deeply that that occurred and made that known," Clinton said. The announcement comes a day after the two sides agreed to indirect talks, facilitated by George Mitchell, the Obama administrations special envoy to the Middle East. Israel has been under scrutiny recently for some of its territorial occupancies and how they should be treated internationally. ... Source: en.newsxs.com --- 3 hours ago

“Though Bush 41 and Bush 43 often disagreed, one issue did unite them both with Bill Clinton: protectionism. Globalists all, they rejected any federal measure to protect America’s industrial base, economic independence or the wages of U.S. workers. Together they rammed through NAFTA, brought America under the World Trade Organization, abolished tariffs and granted Chinese-made goods unrestricted access to the immense U.S. market.” - Pat Buchanan ... Secretary of State Hillary Clinton criticized Israel today for announcing an expansion of settlements while Vice President Joe Biden was visiting the country this week. The announcement forced Biden to issue a statement condemning the decision while in the midst of touring through Israel and meeting with top officials. "It was insulting," Clinton told MSNBC's Andrea Mitchell in an interview airing today. "And it was insulting not just to the vice president, who certainly didn't deserve that. He was there with a very clear message of commitment to the peace process solidarity with the Israeli people. But it was an insult to the United States." On Tuesday, Israel approved 1600 new homes in East Jerusalem, where Palestinians feels their land is being encroached on. The U.S. has urged Israel to stop expanding settlements in order to improve the climate for peace talks. "I condemn the decision by the government of Israel to advance planning for new housing units in East Jerusalem," Biden said in a statement. "We must build an atmosphere to support negotiations, not complicate them." Prime Minister Benjamin Netenyahu said he was unaware the announcemnet woudl come when it did and has apologized to Biden. Israel is considering changes in its law to require a member of the prime minister's office to be present whenever such decisions are made, preventing the miscommunication that led to this week's diplomatic flub. ...
