PORTLAND, Maine - Failure always had been foreign to Clay Buchholz, and, at 21, he saw no reason why it wouldn't stay that way forever. He shredded Double A to the point that his pitching coach there later said, "a bad outing for him was 10 or 12 strikeouts in six innings." He made Pawtucket an eight-start speed bump. He ... ... Clay Buchholz electrified the Red Sox last September when he threw a no-hitter in his second career start, but then he suffered through a difficult rookie year. Michael Bowden was solid in his winning five-inning debut this month, and dominated in the minors. Neither prospect, though, will return to the club for the stretch run. ... Not much has changed since yesterday with Mike Lowell , but he did feel a slight improvement today in regards to the slightly torn labrum in his right hip, Red Sox spokesman John Blake said in a release. The conference call with doctors he was going to have today will now be tomorrow. How that affects his stated hope to play in tomorrows game in Toronto remains to be seen. The Red Sox will assess Lowell further tomorrow. The Red Sox also decided how they want the offseason of Clay Buchholz to proceed. He will play in the Arizona Fall League, the plan being hell throw 25 innings over the course of a month. Buchholz concluded his season with the Portland Sea Dogs on a mostly postive note after his disastrous season in the Red Sox rotation. First baseman Aaron Bates and outfielder Josh Reddick will also report to the AFL, joining pitchers T.J. Large, Ryne Lawson, and Beau Vaughan and catcher Mark Wagner. ... The two most interesting nuggets to come out of Terry Francona's pregame meeting with reporters today involved the decision to shut down pitcher Michael Bowden for the season (don't worry, he's fully healthy) and his admittedly tough decision to go with Mark Kotsay over Jacoby Ellsbury in the leadoff spot today. We'll start with Bowden , whose winning performance Aug. 30 against the White Sox in his major league debut offered oodles of promise. He will not be brought up from Triple A Pawtucket so he can begin his winter program. Theo Epstein and the Sox player development team made the decision, a process they involved Francona in. "His pitching is going to be done for the year," Francona said. "He's had a pretty good year. It's time to congratulate him, let him go about his winter, continue to get stronger, develop, things like that. He had a heckuva year." The Red Sox have also spoken with Clay Buchholz about his immediate future. "That's a little more up in the air, how his winter is going to progress," Francona said. "We talked to him for about a half hour. We'll continue to talk to him over the next couple of days on just how we want to progress with the rest of his fall and winter." The talk turned to putting Kotsay in the lineup over Ellsbury. Ultimately, Francona said, it boiled down to the fact that he didn't want Kotsay to sit three straight games and because Ellsbury experienced some slight tightness in a quadriceps muscle i ... Yesterday marked two important milestones for Clay Buchholz, for the best and worst of reasons: It was the first-year anniversary of his no-hitter and also the final game of his regular season. Minor league teams, of course, are the only ones whose season ends Sept. 1, and Buchholz is with Double A Portland now after a season of ineffectiveness. "It's a pretty neat little deal. It sucks that I'm not up there right now," Buchholz said, nicely summing up the duality in a breath or two. After his disastrous season, Buchholz has salvaged his confidence during two starts with the Sea Dogs (you can read more in today's Globe ). His stats in Portland (in a small sample size) are close to what he did there before his promotion to Triple A Pawtucket last year: 2008's two Portland starts: 1-0, 15 IP, 18 K, 1.80 ERA, 0.53 WHIP 2007's 15 Portland starts: 7-2, 86.2 IP, 116 K, 1.77 ERA, 0.89 WHIP When, then, might Buchholz rejoin the Red Sox? When I asked Sea Dogs manager Arnie Beyeler, which, if any, of his players might be called up, he said, "The easy answer Buch's been up there. If he can get rolling . . ." Buchholz will make one start against Trenton in the playoffs, and he seemed intent on (or maybe resigned to) finishing the Eastern League playoffs with Portland. "Maybe we can get a championship for this team, then get that call and help another team win," he said. Does Buchholz think he might make it back to Boston this season? "I don't kn ... Clay Buchholz may have thrown a no-hitter for the Red Sox last season, but he didn’t have enough to knock off the Trenton Thunder last night. The Yankees top prospect in the minor leagues, center fielder Austin Jackson, hit a game-tying three-run home run off Buchholz in the bottom of the sixth inning, and DH P.J. Pilittere knocked in the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth inning to lead Trenton past Portland, 4-3. The win gave the Thunder a commanding 2-0 lead in the best-of-five series, with Game Three to take place Friday night in Portland. In what was expected to be a pitcher's duel between Buchholz and one of the Yankees' top pitching prospects, right-hander Jeffrey Marquez, both pitchers allowed three runs. Buchholz gave up all three on the aforementioned Jackson home run, one of six hits he allowed in his six innings. He also struck out nine and walked one. Marquez, meanwhile, allowed eight hits, struck out three and walked two in five innings, before giving way to the bullpen, which scattered two hits and three walks over four shutout innings to close out the win. One of those pitchers was Humberto Sanchez, one of the players acquired from Detroit in the Gary Sheffield trade who continues to recover from Tommy John surgery. ... TRENTON - Thanks to yet another brilliant pitching performance from their entire staff, the Trenton Thunder took the first game of the best-of-five series, beating the Portland Sea Dogs by a score of 2-1. Starter Eric Hacker went 5.2 innings to get the win, while Michael Dunn and Jhonny Nunez combined to hurl 3.1 no-hit innings out of the bullpen to preserve the win. Winning tonight was all the more important with Portland throwing phenom Clay Buchholz in Game Two tomorrow night. Trenton will send top prospect Jeffrey Marquez to the mound. ... For the Red Sox tonight against Orioles lefty Garrett Olson: Ellsbury, RF, Pedroia, 2B, Ortiz, DH, Youkilis, 3B, Bay, LF, Lowrie, SS, Varitek, C, Bailey, 1B, Crisp, CF, Byrd pitching. Youkilis's flu or virus subsided, and he called manager Terry Francona Monday morning to say he was fine to play. So he's back in the cleanup hole and Pedroia is back hitting second. J.D. Drew and Mike Lowell were testing their injuries with some BP. Bartolo Colon threw six strong innings in the minors. The Red Sox would like him to pitch one more time, but may not be able to leave him down there any longer. Clay Buchholz, who pitched his famous no-hitter against the Orioles here one year ago tonight, will pitch for Double A Portland in the EL playoffs. ... Source: www.kansas.com --- 41 days ago
Last Sept. 1, Clay Buchholz dazzled the baseball world by throwing a no-hitter for the Boston Red Sox in just his second-major league start. But heading into the anniversary of that feat, Buchholz is with the Portland Sea Dogs of the Double-A Eastern League. Portland plays its last regular-season game Monday. "This is definitely a roller coaster for me," the 24-year-old Buchholz said before a recent Sea Dogs' game. "The adversity that came toward me this year started in spring training and never quit. It just pounded me all year." Before this season, success came easily for Buchholz, who was a star at Angelina (Texas) Junior College and in the minor leagues before making his Red Sox debut last August. Then he hurled his masterpiece -- a 10-0 victory over the Baltimore Orioles, allowing four baserunners and retiring the final 11 batters. ... Source: www.thebostonchannel.com --- 40 days ago
