Saturday was an engine revving experience for El Doradoans. The first Sutherlands Summer Days Classic Car Show began Saturday morning at 9 in the Sutherlands parking lot. Beyond the pure engine pumping excitement, the event benefited the local safe house. The El Dorado Women’s Shelter received donations from the event as participants and onlookers enjoyed the geared up fun. Mark Adams, of Augusta, was one of many participants in the day’s events. This event was the first for Adams and his two show pieces. He entered a Lincoln and a Cadillac in the event. Adams had one of the more unique cars on display, a 1976 Cadillac Hearse. As Adams adjusted the slide-in coffin he said, “When someone walks up and says, ‘it’s a hearse,’ I love seeing their faces. “It’s an expression worth a thousands words.” Adams said he’s always been interested in cars and as a child he could name the types of cars as they drove by on the street. “I’ve been interested in cars since I was a little kid,” said Adams. Adams’ hearse has a 500 cubic motor and all original features except for the hub caps. The bed of the hearse is entirely electrical and features tracks for the slide in casket, allowing the coffin to enter from the rear or the sides. He’s had the Car for about six months and drives it frequently. “I like to be odd, you know, different,” said Adams.
