Clarence Thomas in a 1959 high school photo. Credit: Associated Press. Clarence Thomas has insisted that affirmative action tainted the value of his Yale law degree, and destroyed his chances for a big firm job out of school. In his memoir, published last fall, he wrote: “I’d learned the hard way that a law [...] ... Source: dallasmorningviewsblog.dallasnews.com --- 3 days ago
Interesting Points commentary section this weekend, full of intriguing "points" of view. My personal faves are the Katz and Fulwood pieces for their sheer originality.... Hope you enjoy all or some of the following: Robert D. Kaplan on what it takes to earn the highest award the U.S. military can bestow -- and why the public fails to appreciate its worth. Rod Dreher about Episcopal priest Chloe Breyer memoir, in which she wrote about her befuddlement that prisoners she was ministering to responded more to the stern teachings of Islam than her squishy version of Christianity. Breyer, like so many liberals, didn't understand that the poor and the working class need a strict code of personal and social morality more than the well-off do, precisely because the consequences for failure are so much harsher for them. Conservatives get this. But what conservatives don't get, and liberals do, is the extent to which economic conditions help or hinder the development of a healthy moral atmosphere. In their important new book "Grand New Party," young conservatives Ross Douthat and Reihan Salam show how the Republican Party, whose cultural beliefs generally resonate with working-class views, has dropped the ball on relating to working-class economic insecurity. For all their advantages this election year, the Democrats are still in thrall to cultural elitists. If the GOP can get right on pro-family economic policies, it can hold off the Democr ... Via Allahpundit at Hot Air , we learned that Whoopi Goldberg delighted the Manhattan liberal theatre crowd with a little Clarence Thomas-bashing while hosting the Tony Awards last night on CBS. Typically, she suggested that Justice Thomas wasn't really a black man. She introduced actor Laurence Fishburne this way: And here’s a man who found out just how fantastic it is also when he picked up a Tony in Two Trains Running, currently on Broadway as the first African-American Supreme Court Justice – actually the only African-American Supreme -- no, that’s not true. [Laughter and applause] I forgot! I forgot! Allahpundit also links to an AP story on how black conservatives like Armstrong Williams and J.C. Watts are thinking really hard about voting for Obama. Saying some kind words about the Democrat might be well-mannered, but Watts goes way beyond that to trash Republican efforts at black outreach: J.C. Watts, a former Oklahoma congressman who once was part of the GOP House leadership, said he's thinking of voting for Obama. Watts said he's still a Republican, but he criticizes his party for neglecting the black community. Black Republicans, he said, have to concede that while they might not agree with Democrats on issues, at least that party reaches out to them. "And Obama highlights that even more," Watts said, adding that he expects Obama to take on issues such as poverty and urban policy. "Republicans often seem indifferent to th ... Although a Yale Law School diploma didn't prevent Clarence Thomas from getting a seat on the U.S. Supreme Court bench, it didn't help him much either, he has said. In particular, the African-American justice has blamed Yale's affirmative action program for stigmatizing black graduates, and contends his law degree is… ... The Wall Street Journal online put a question mark after the notion, but I’m making it a declarative. There’s no doubt that Jindal is the change agent that Republicans could trot out there to offset Obama. He’s us in elephant-face. A ready made tool for the GOP. Clarence Thomas, the AP reports, hasn’t spoken during a Supreme Court case in two years. That’s 142 cases of Constitutional importance, and Thomas just sits there silently. Though people protested outside the Capitol back in October 1991 as the Senate confirmed Judge Clarence Thomas to the Supreme Court, political experts at the time said that the accusations of sexual harassment against the conservative judge along with other evidence of his being ill suited for service would fade from memory.
