When I heard Civilization was coming to the console I was simultaneously excited and repelled. I have logged hundreds of hours playing Civilization II on the PC. As a matter of fact, I’m pretty sure it is responsible for my not getting the best grades during one semester of college. Civilization: Revolution continues that addiction. Yes, [...] ...

I really want to nuke Athens. I know it's possible. Hell, I've watched and rewatched the YouTube videos of the 14-year-olds who've done it in Sid Meier's new game, Civilization Revolution . The guttural roar of the ICBM taking off, the flare of the missile as it arcs slowly across the sky, the terrifying rumble in your Xbox 360 controller as the nuke pulverizes the target: It's awesome . I can't sleep until I've rained that sort of death on the world. What the hell is wrong with me? There are a lot of ways to win at Civilization Revolution that do not involve taking a happy, peaceful city and reducing it to a smoldering gravesite filled with radioactive trinitite. I could, for example, train my country in brilliant artistry, building Wonders of the World -- a " cultural victory ," as it's called. Or I could win by becoming a great economic power, enriching my citizens and the global community. But no. Every time I plunge into a game, I inevitably choose the most Cro-Magnon, "Hulk smash, Hulk destroy" strategy possible. Or maybe I geek out and try to discover spaceflight before anyone else, so I can outfit my hermetically sealed, glassed-in astronaut city with interstellar warp drives, blur the stars into hyperspace, arrive at Alpha Centauri, encounter alien worlds ... and then try to kill them . Ooooh, you guys back home wanna spend your time carefully building the Hanging Gardens, the Colossus of Rhodes, the Alexandrian Library? ...

Continuing strong sales of Grand Theft Auto IV, along with Top Spin 3 and Sid Meier's Civilization Revolution propelled Take-Two to a new record quarter, the fifth one in a row that it has beaten its own expectations. ...

Filed under: PC , Sony PlayStation 3 , Microsoft Xbox 360 , Business Take-Two Interactive's third-quarter fiscal results have proven that crime really does pay, with law-breaking blockbuster Grand Theft Auto IV leading sales, alongside Top Spin 3 and Sid Meier's Civilization Revolution . The three-month financial period, ended July 31, 2008, saw the publisher rake in net revenues of $433.8 million, nearly double the $206.4 million it earned during the same, GTA-less quarter of 2007. If you're reading this paragraph, we can only assume that you're keen on seeing even more numbers. Like $51.8 million, Take-Two's net income for the quarter and a considerable improvement on last year's net loss of $58.5 million. In terms of notable expenses, Take-Two burned through $12.6 million in "stock-based compensation," $1.8 million for "business reorganization" and $5.4 million for "professional fees and legal expenses," primarily aimed at warding off the advances of EA. Finally, net revenues for Take-Two's first three quarters in total were just over $1.2 billion, versus $689.2 million for the same period a year ago. In summary: Grand Theft Auto IV = money.   Read  |  Permalink  |  Email this  |  Linking Blogs  |  Comments ...

Videogamer writes: "There will be no console version of Football Manager 2009 because the control system on last year's 360 game "was crap", Sports Interactive MD Miles Jacobson has revealed. Speaking during the game's unveiling in London last night, Jacobson said that the team may one day return the series to consoles, taking inspiration from 2K Games' critically acclaimed console strategy game Civilization Revolution. He said: "We thought we'd improved a lot last year. It was still too hard to use. So we decided to have at least a year off on the 360 this year. The good news is that there's been one game that was similar to us on the PC that's come out and really nailed a good control system for quite a complicated system, which was Civilization Revolution. So we'll probably look at it again in the future. But we really wanted to concentrate on the 3D engine this year and getting that nailed and the other improvements that have gone in rather than thinking about the consoles this year." ...

The digital Revolution now engulfing our world emerged from the events during and immediately after the Second World War, when intellectual titans such as Alan Turing, John von Neumann, Norbert Wiener, and Claude Shannon roamed the Earth. Many of the predictions they made for the future in those early days are now reality, or something close to it. Turing foresaw computers as artificial intelligences. Neumann imagined machines that could reproduce themselves. Wiener guessed at a merging of biology and technology, and Shannon predicted the primacy of pure information over physical matter. But were these "founding fathers" to somehow see the state of modern computer science, they might be surprised that some of their wildest dreams are being fulfilled not under the explicit auspice of research, but of recreation. Here, Seed documents five projects that are expanding the boundaries of science through an increasingly vital medium: video games. — Abbie Morgan and Lee Billings Emergence & Complexity Spore The same techniques scientists use to study the phenomena of emergence and complexity are also being used to create content in a video game. Spore , designed by Will Wright and developed by Maxis, lets players construct a creature and guide its growth from a microbe to a fully developed being. The creature then becomes part of a tribe that advances all the way to a space-faring Civilization. Much of the game's content is procedurally g ...

To the surprise of no-one, Grand Theft Auto IV, the biggest videogame blockbuster this side of MGS4, has sold 10 million copies worldwide. This has undoubtedly lead to a record third quarter for Take-Two, GTA's publisher, although there were other games that helped achieve that goal, as Take-Two CEO, Ben Feder, pointed out: "I'm extremely pleased with our strong position heading into the holiday season", said Feder. "Our world-class holiday portfolio includes Grand Theft Auto IV, Top Spin 3, Sid Meier's Civilization Revolution, and Carnival Games, as well as upcoming hits such as Midnight Club: Los Angeles, BioShock for PS3, and a range of sports titles." Take-Two's third quarter sales were up to $433.8 million, compared to $206.4 million during the same period last year. Profits, on the other hand, were up to $51.8 million, compared to a loss of $58.5 million last year. Take-Two aren't yet content with the GTA IV numbers, though, as they are planning an advertising campaign to take advantage of the holiday season, as well as the expected increase in hardware sales over the next few months. The hardware manufacturers are said to be "planning to support GTA IV in a major way," said Feder. Contributor: Oliver ...
