Selectmen and DPW commissioners on Tuesday appointed two new board members, expanding the commission to five members. The board and commission appointed Edward Winnett to a three-year term and Kevin Cleary to a two-year term. Six candidates were interviewed for the two posts. Winnett, a lifelong Whitman resident and regional director for a California-based technical support company involved in pharmaceuticals, said he believes “we all have a Civic Duty, not only to participate in town meeting, but in town government.” Winnett cited as one of his qualifications having held a Class 4 state license while working for the Abington/Rockland Joint Water Works in roles that included pipe installation and drinking water operations. Cleary, an 11-year Whitman resident, has worked for the past 14 years in heavy Duty utilities construction with a 100-year-old general contractor firm in Boston. The company’s projects have ranged in cost from $2 million to $250 million, and Cleary said he is currently engaged in a $40 million highway reconstruction project. “So I think I have some experience with the type of work the DPW does,” Cleary said. ...
