It doesn't seem - for now at least - the credit crunch that is decimating the US economy has reached Ottawa. In a memo to City councillors, below, the City treasurer Marian Simulik says everything at the City is A-OK. I am pleased to report that Moody’s Investor Services has reconfirmed the City’s Aaa rating which is the highest rating given by Moody’s. The rating agency has just released its report on the City which is attached for your reference. The report indicates that this rating is based on “a history of prudent financial management, low debt burden, strong reserve position and stable economic base.” The report also mentions the City’s commitment to long-range financial planning, pay-as-you-go capital financing and controls on new tax supported borrowing. Moody’s refers to the Fiscal Framework which provides “specific guidelines designed to bolster financial and debt operations over the medium term.” Maintaining the Aaa rating is important to the City’s debt financing activities to ensure that City debentures are eligible investments for as many investors as possible, especially in the challenging financial markets which currently exist. ... Greensburg is beginning construction of its new City Hall. Officials from the City and the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Rural Development program had a groundbreaking ceremony Friday for the $2.95 million, energy-efficient facility. The building will replace the one destroyed during the May 4, 2007, tornado. Funding includes $1.18 million from the Federal Emergency Management Agency and $900,000 from the Agriculture Department. ST. PETERSBURG -- Mayor Rick Baker proclaimed 2008 the Year of the Rays today during a City Council meeting full of pennant excitement. The meeting began with council members, some with blue fauxhawks, others with RayHawk wigs and nearly all with Rays apparel, booing Baker for not changing his hair for the Rays. "We expected a lot more out of the administration side," said council Chairman Jamie Bennett, who sported a blue fauxhawk. "I'm wearing a hat," Baker protested, gesturing to his baseball cap. Baker and the council members then gathered in a row at the center of the council chambers, threw their arms around one another and broke into a verse of Take Me Out to the Ballgame. They chanted, "let's go, Rays!" "This is the first time I ever sang a song with my arm around a guy with blue hair before," said Baker. Baker announced last week that City officials would began every council meeting for the rest of the season with the song. The Rays spirit took hold of the council chambers even while the room stood silently in prayer. State Rep. Mr. Tom Sanders, Director of the Robert J. Dole VA Medical Center in Wichita, will hold a Town Hall Meeting at 7 p.m. on Oct. 2, 2008. This informational meeting will be at the Kansas Soldiers Home in Eisenhower Hall, Fort Dodge. Mr. Sanders will be joined by representatives from congressional offices and veterans service organizations. Discussions will cover the future plans for the VA, the enrollment process, eligibility issues and other items of interest to all veterans.
