There is an obsession with the title of “greatest ever.” For some people there just has to be that singular moment where one single film, album or game can define the medium it is a part of. The question needs to be asked though: why? As a student majoring in cinema and television arts, I’ve had [...] ...

Until I learn that movie is reference to many to other shows such as The Simpson on "Rosebud" and Tiny Toon Adventure on "Citizen Kane". And more, I may not seen or miss. I cannot think of my "rosebud" it should be. I guess probably America dog. ...

RATING: (POLITE APPLAUSE) Some movies really should have been made in color. We're not talking about "Citizen Kane" or "Casablanca" here. But "Holiday Inn" (1942), a piece of musical-comedy froth that introduced the song "White Christmas," really could have... ...

First it was a website , then a book , and now it's a full-blown exhibit . "Odd Wisconsin" opens at the Wisconsin Historical Museum on October 3rd. From the website : WARNING! Objects Are More Intriguing Than They First Appear! How did a rock, a plastic pink flamingo, and a few strips of aluminum make history? Why did a family collect skunk oil in a jar? How did a Wisconsin Congressman come to possess a 7-foot-long bowie knife? From séances and college pranks to assassinations and the fight for civil rights, Odd Wisconsin features scores of curious and authentic artifacts, documents, and images which may surprise, perplex, and astonish you. Odd Wisconsin... satisfy your curiosity. Seth Gilbert submits: When Warner Brothers released "300" in 2007, the views of critics and fans varied widely. Some, like Richard Roeper, loved it. He went so far as to call it "the "’Citizen Kane’ of graphic novels." Others, like the Wall Street Journal’s Joe Morgenstern, or the New York Times' A.O Scott , found the film almost utterly unredeeming ; too violent and undeveloped. The common ground, amongst a majority of views, was the visual effects. That point wasn’t lost on the gaming industry. In July, Ubisoft acquired Hybride Technologies , the special effects shop behind the film (and also Sin City). Now, EA (ERTS) is tapping "300"’s director  Zack Snyder with a three game development deal. Complete Story » ...

Stay with me here. It gets a little convoluted. But it's how my mind works. The screening this weekend of "War of the Worlds" at the Times Cinema, 5906 W. Vliet St., and a stage production of the 1938 Orson Welles radio broadcast by L.A. Theatre Works at the Wilson Center For the Arts , Thursday - got me thinking about my favorite film - Welles'  "Citizen Kane." Which got me thinking about "Crimes and Misdemeanors," by Woody Allen, which is my other favorite movie (and David Zucker's too.) Which got me thinking about my next favorite film the less well known "To Sleep With Anger," the eloquent, emotionally generous and vivid piece of African-Americana by Charles Burnett. Which gave me a reason to mention Burnett's appearance at the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee this weekend. See my interview with him here. Burnett's new film "Namibia: The Struggle for Liberation," with Danny Glover, will be shown Saturday at 6 p.m. at the Union Theatre, 2200 E. Kenwood Blvd. General admission is $10, $7 for the UWM community. He will take questions after the screening.   Burnett won a MacArthur Foundation genius award and his 1977 film "Killer of Sheep" was selected as being worthy of preservation by the Library of Congress.  But I love "To Sleep With Anger," a mutli-faceted gem about the disconnect between parents and children, a parable about how one gets one's cultural identity from one's family, and about how the lesser of two evils is s ...
