CinemaNow , one of the oldest movie and TV show download sites, has inked a deal that will make its movie and TV show downloads playable on both PCs and Macs. CinemaNow will now utilize Widevine Technologies ' multi-format DRM solution to make their download-to-own movies viewable on Windows, Mac and Linux machines. Pay-per-view titles will also be streamable using Internet Explorer, Safari, Firefox or Opera browsers. CinemaNow's decision to go cross-platform could help the company wrestle market share away from Apple iTunes, which dominates the paid digital video business. Up to now, iTunes has been the only download service to sell major studio movie downloads playable on Apple computers and PCs. methodshop ...

A new project announced by internet giant Yahoo is promising to bring the wonders of the web to television, allowing viewers to customise their TV screens with a swathe of internet services including eBay listings, weather, financial news and Twitter updates. A further move towards the convergence between television and the internet, The Widget Channel is the result of a collaboration between Yahoo and technology manufacturer Intel. Intel is building the hardware for the service to work in a series of digital televisions and set-top boxes. Pitched as a way of "complementing and enhancing the traditional TV environment", the Widget Channel will be available in the US in the first half of next year. Rather than experimenting with full web access on a TV screen, Yahoo is exploiting the popularity of "widgets" - smaller, customisable versions of web-based services that already feature on computer desktops and on many websites, including the home page of bbc.co.uk. Yahoo is also capitalising on the trend for application platforms. Both Apple and Facebook have built a large offering of applications by opening parts of their code to external developers. A handful of high profile web services have confirmed they will be available on the Widget Channel including Disney-ABC, Joost, CinemaNow and MTV, along with advertising firm Group M. Disney-ABC's executive vice-president, Albert Cheng, said the platform offered "a broad canvas" for adve ...

Dave Zatz submits: Comcast’s (CMCSA) Fancast property has recently expanded from solely streaming (Hulu) web video, to offering Internet video downloads . Joining the likes of Amazon (AMZN) Unbox, CinemaNow, and Blockbuster (BBI), the Fancast Media Manager allows you to rent or purchase television and movie content for Windows PC viewing. Comcast-owned video directory/portal Fancast has rolled out its own video download store, competing with the likes of Amazon Unbox, CinemaNow and Blockbuster. At first, this may seem ho-hum, but it fits with Comcast’s goal of turning Fancast into the last programming guide you’ll ever need. Fancast launched in January as part of Comcast’s “Project Infinity,” which [...] ...

The Cinematic Internet from JD Lasica on Vimeo. At the Intel Developer Forum Wednesday I was pulled aside and invited to interview Eric B. Kim, an Intel senior vice president and general manager of its Digital Home Group. Earlier in the day I heard Kim give a keynote talk with Patrick Barry, vice presdent of TV for Yahoo! Kim talks about this significant new development in the 11-minute interview above. Watch it on Vimeo. Intel is one of the few technology companies with the leverage to pull the major media companies (Disney, ABC, Blockbuster, CBS Interactive, Cinequest, CinemaNow, many others) and advertising agencies into this new two-way arena. (See the press release.) Here's what I think about all this (and I'm most decidedly not speaking for Intel in any way here.) Kim's quote that most stuck out for me was this: "We're bringing television to the internet." Notice what Kim didn't say: We're bringing the Internet to television, which has been the approach of the big movie studios until now. (Or, until recently, We're preventing the Internet from coming to TV.) I don't know whether Kim's turn of phrase was intentional or not — I suspect so — but the... ...

In a move that could step up the competitive pressure on Apple, movie download service CinemaNow has inked a deal that will make its movie and TV show downloads playable on both PCs and Macs. CinemaNow announced today it has signed a deal to use Widevine Technologies' multi-format digital rights management and copy-protection technology to make CinemaNow's video downloads playable on Windows, Mac and Linux platforms. The technology also enables CinemaNow to stream movies to users through the Internet Explorer, FireFox, Safari and Opera browsers. The move could help the company wrestle market share away from Apple iTunes, which dominates the paid digital video business. Up to now, iTunes has been the only download service to sell major studio movie downloads playable on Apple computers and PCs. CinemaNow, Amazon.com, Movielink and others have been restricted by DRM to offering downloads compatible with PCs and Windows Media portable devices, the latter of which make up a fraction of the portable market compared to the iPod. ITunes still offers the only downloads playable on the iPod, giving it a considerable edge over competitors. With its Widevine partnership, CinemaNow´s digital content will be available on a wide range of consumer electronic devices as well as new devices shipping to retail with CinemaNow´s "CE Store" application. CinemaNow downloads still won´t play on iPods, a spokeswoman confirmed. "Widevine´s technology helps Cinem ...

If you've had a chance to the try the CinemaNow offer that came with your MediaSmart Server (MSS), then you have experienced the simplicity of downloading content to your home, and how much easier this is than running to the store, or waiting 3 days for the mail. If not, then you should try it. Since the MSS is a "headless" device, downloading movies at home means using a PC to access the CinemaNow Website, finding and ordering the movie and downloading it to your PC. From there it can be streamed to any Digital Media Receiver (DMR) that supports protected content streaming, in the house. But you've got this great home server and may have wondered how to use it to store, protect and stream your movies. There are a couple reasons you might want to do this: Your MSS is an always on device - so you can enjoy the content anytime. Your MSS can protect the content file from disk failure by using its duplication mechanism to automatically keep a backup copy. Note that most content providers only allow a file to be downloaded once. Some studios only allow 1 license for their content; so if you... ...
