Online Groups are quickly becoming a staple of Church sites. Some churches are using CMS, like drupal and the organic Groups module, to build their Groups while others use sites like Church Community Builder to manage their members and provide online Groups. Looking at how some of these Groups are setup I notice a number of differences in information architecture. Some of the different IAs are fairly good and meet the needs to of the average user. Others suffer from missing features or are difficult for the average user to find what they are looking for. When it comes to Groups information architecture what aspects do you think should be there, how do you think they should be laid out, and how should they be worded and configured? For example, take this churches group on g.d.o. One of the things I see missing is an accessible link to a group calendar of events. While this may not be important to the kinds of Groups that are typically on g.d.o I can see them as being important to most local Church Groups. Another example, that can easily be debated, is naming schemes for URLs. Say you have a Groups at example.com/group/mygroup. Should a link to an event be at example.com/group/mygroup/event/title or at example.com/event/title with a breadcrumb pointing back to the group? I'm curious what your preferences are and why. Thoughts? Churches ...

City Hall was packed last Tuesday night with scowling residents from the Oakland Street area who believed a tattoo parlor was moving into their neighborhood. Armed with petitions and warnings about possible effects on the area’s children, the protestors would soon learn they were fighting a beautician seeking a license for permanent cosmetics. “We approached every home on Oakland Street,” said Phyllis Rosborough, of the First Baptist Church of Medford, “and received signatures from all but two houses on this street in opposition.” Neighbors and representatives from the Oakland Park Children’s Center also presented their petitions and concerns. Representing beautician Ruth Janet Guzman, attorney Robert Abruzese tried to explain to the crowd that while his client was seeking a “body art” license, she was only interested in cosmetic applications. “I do think it’s unfortunate because of the limitation the ordinance offers, it gives out the wrong impression to people,” said Abruzese. “It is not a tattoo parlor whatsoever.” While Guzman already has a salon set to open on 11 Oakland St., Abruzese explained she needs additional permits for any sort of permanent cosmetics she might offer. Such procedures include eyebrow replacement, lip definition enhancement and scar improvement. To perform such procedures, Guzman would have to be a licensed body art establishment. The resistance dimmed a bit after Abruzese’s explanation, but petitione ...

Book -- $14.93 A Leadership Network Publication A New Kind of Christian 's conversation between a pastor and his daughter's high school science teacher reveals that wisdom for life's most pressing spiritual questions can come from the most unlikely sources. This stirring fable captures a new spirit of Christianity--where personal, daily interaction with God is more important than institutional Church structures, where faith is more about a way of life than a system of belief, where being authentically good is more important than being doctrinally "right," and where one's direction is more important than one's present location. Brian McLaren's delightful account offers a wise and wondrous approach for revitalizing Christian spiritual life and Christian congregations.
