Costume / recipe conundrum: We're hosting a rock star themed potluck near Halloween. The dishes we supply need to be in a theme that corresponds to the costume. We need help! So we're trying to continue a potluck tradition with a group of friends. The last one was a success (theme: anything on a stick). This time we're going to play Rock Band and theme the potluck around rock stars costumes and dishes that go along with that. We need idea for me and for my wife. We're both larger people, and I've got a goatee that I'm not willing to shave off for this. Really, I don't think it has to be too fussy about being on topic, as long as the costume is music related, and the food is at least related to the costume via a pun. Ideas I've thought of so far for myself: - Meat Loaf (where am I going to find a frilly shirt in my size?) - Chuck Berry (I could use either beef Chuck or berries). I would look terrible. - James Brown (brownies!) - Chef from South Park (salty chocolate balls!) I'm stumped for my wife. On the October 2 edition of MSNBC's Hardball , NBC political director Chuck Todd falsely claimed that the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit "wants to get rid of the Pledge" of Allegiance. In fact, in the case that Todd was referring to, Newdow v. U.S. Congress , a three-judge 9th Circuit panel did not decide that the entire Pledge of Allegiance was unconstitutional, but rather " h[e]ld that ... the 1954 Act adding the words 'under God' to the Pledge ... violate[s] the Establishment Clause" of the First Amendment. As the 9th Circuit noted, before the 1954 act, the Pledge of Allegiance was: "I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation indivisible, with liberty and justice for all." The court did not find anything unconstitutional about the remaining language of the pledge. (The Supreme Court subsequently vacated the 9th Circuit's decision, on the grounds that the plaintiff, Michael Newdow, did not have standing to bring the case.) Todd made his comment while discussing Gov. Sarah Palin's response to this question from CBS Evening News anchor Katie Couric: "What other Supreme Court decisions do you disagree with?" One of the so-called tribal chiefs of a Kansas group that claims to be an American Indian nation was sentenced Thursday to one year and a day in federal prison for his role in a scheme to defraud immigrants. Chuck Flynn of Wichita showed no emotion as he was sentenced to the prison time prosecutors agreed to as part of a plea deal. He pleaded guilty in July to encouraging illegal immigrants to live in the United States. Flynn made no statement to the court. U.S. District Judge Wesley Brown also ordered Flynn to serve three years probation after his release. Brown wished Flynn good luck after his sentencing, and allowed him to voluntarily report to federal prison to serve his time. Prosecutors say the Kaweah Indian Nation and its grand chief, Malcolm Webber, defrauded immigrants by telling them the tribal identification documents could be used to get Social Security cards, U.S. passports, health care benefits and driver's licenses. ...
