When Chuck Berry wants bitches, all he has to do is point at them and say, “Yeah, that’s the one. And that one.” I went to the Long Beach Blues Festival on Saturday to watch Berry. The man is almost impossible to see play. He’s 81 years old and only plays once a month in a small blues club in St. Louis. Tickets are supposedly only handed out to longtime patrons. But Berry came to play in Long Beach, so I happily dropped $60 on a ticket. I think that’s a fair price for seeing the man who invented rock n’ roll play a live show. I recorded a video of him playing a 13-minute version of “Johnny B. Goode”. Sadly, Berry’s age means he can’t play the guitar worth a shit anymore. He’s slow and way out of tune, but oddly enough, there are a few moments where he really turns it on and sounds amazing. So who knows, maybe he plays a lot of bizarre distorted riffs because he likes it. Who’s going to tell Chuck Berry how to play a goddamn guitar? Not me. It was a really fun time, though. Perhaps the funniest/most retarded moment of the night was when he played “My Ding-a-Ling”. I have a few moments of it here: I also have videos of him playing “Nadine”, “You Never Can Tell”, and parts of “Sweet Little Sixteen”. If anyone’s interested, let me know in the comments and I’ll upload them. ...
