But with more and more TV shows about wealthy teens, like the CW network’s “Gossip Girl” and MTV’s “My Super Sweet 16” on the airwaves, parents may find themselves bombarded with an unprecedented number of requests for $140 Coach bags and $60 Abercrombie jeans. Here’s how to balance the desire to make your kids happy with the need to avoid bankruptcy. • Ask why kids want designer duds. Usually, the motivation is to fit in or acquire social status. Christine Feiler, whose kids are 6, 9, 12 and 14, says she regularly hears: “Everyone else has it!” One strategy is to talk about alternative ways of accomplishing that same goal, says Dee Shepherd-Look, a clinical psychologist who specializes in children and families. Parents can encourage their kids to more actively call friends and organize gatherings. “Studies on adolescent popularity show that popular kids are the ones who reach out, make things happen, who tend to be complimentary to other kids,” says Shepherd-Look. • Lay out the financial picture. Last night Christine Taylor walked the Project A.L.S. Benefit Gala red carpet and I couldn't help but reminisce. See, while everyone associates her with "The Brady Bunch," I belong to a generation who remembers the time she spent working at The Bar None Ranch. Christine plated Melody on "Hey Dude" for five seasons that saw Ted and Brad flirt endlessly. I love that Melody wasn't the pretty one on the show -- just speaks to how many model-types work at dude ranches, no? For a fun little flashback, check out the opening credits . If you didn't start singing along -- "Yippee kai aie what?" -- it's going to seem like I'm speaking a foreign language here, but the late '80s/early '90s were a fantastic time to be a kid because of Nickelodeon. Just think about all the amazing series they showed back then -- "You Can't Do That On Television," "Clarissa Explains It All," "Salute Your Shorts" and "Are You Afraid Of The Dark?" are to this day some of my favorite shows ever. Looking back so many stars came out of those series. Obviously Melissa Joan Hart was Clarissa, Alanis Morrisette got slimed and Blake Soper became Blake Sennett a.k.a Rilo Kiley's guitarist. But "Are You Afraid of the Dark" featured pre-fame appearances from Neve Campbell, Hayden Christensen, Ryan Gosling, Jay Baruchel, Mia Kirshner and Joanna Garcia. The comedians were out in full effect at last night's 11th Annual "Tomorrow is Tonight" Gala to benefit Project ALS. Sarah Silverman and Jimmy Kimmel continued to stick together, which will only keep fueling the reports that they're back together. Ben Stiller and Christine Taylor looked happy as ever together while Jon Stewart kept people laughing from up on stage — I imagine there were a few politics jabs as they were missing last night's debate . Jeff Vespa/WireImage Rising to fame back in the 90's with his own television show, Ben Stiller is the first to admit that he has "so many skeletons in my closet." Much like any parent, thoughts run through Ben's mind that his children -- Ella Olivia , 6, and Quinlin Dempsey , 3 -- will one day be embarrassed to see their dad in roles such as Ted in There's Something About Mary , but he knows that "time does go on." Now 42, the actor hopes that by the time he reaches 50, he "won't be doing gross-out movies," going on to say, "as an actor, you get older and you're not right for those parts. I think I'm at that stage now." With the success of Night at the Museum , Ben is currently busy filming the sequel which will be out in May 2009. For the Stiller family -- including Ben's wife Christine Taylor -- museums are a big favorite with Ben and Ella going to museums as much as possible especially the American Museum of Natural History in New York. Waverly’s girls swim team splashed its way to a 99-71 win against Watkins Glen on Tuesday. Waverly consistently stayed in the top three positions in each race which scooted them in the lead, and once they were on top they were unstoppable. Alex Bidlack, Hailey Moorehead, Billie Risboskin, and Cassidy Farr started off the wins early with a first place finish in the 200 medley relay with a speedy time of 2:09.31. Maria Sisto, Normandy Yeakel, Christine Talenti, and Taylor Nelson finished in third with a time of 2:23.01. This gave Waverly a 10-4 lead going into the next event. In the 200-yard free Watkins Glen’s Ellie Fausold won the race, but Waverly won the most points with Farr’s second place finish of 2:16.59 and Moorehead’s third place finish of 2:23.84. The Senecas may have lost the battle, but Haileigh Wixon won the 200 IM and broke the pool record with her speedy time of 2:19.96. This however, didn’t deter Waverly one bit as Jessie Alexander grabbed second with 2:38.44 and Risboskin finished third with 2:39.61. Waverly kept its lead at 36-26. The 50-yard free saw a second and third place finish for Waverly’s Bidlack with her time of 29.35 and Sisto with 30.49. Drivers in Greater Taunton were treated to a welcome sight Wednesday, as gas prices at stations scattered throughout the region slipped below $3 per gallon for the first time in nearly a year. The dip, while well-received, was regarded with a fair amount of pessimism by local residents, who agreed that lower prices are well overdue. “It’s not going to stay,” said Bob Taylor, of Taunton, as he filled his Hyundai Santa Fe at Grampy’s Corner Store on High Street, where regular unleaded gas was $2.98 Wednesday afternoon. “It’s still too high — I’d like it to come down around $2.50.” Across town, pumps were busy at Amaro’s, where, as of Wednesday afternoon, a gallon of regular gas cost $2.85. That figure was noted as the lowest in the state by the website GasBuddy.com, which tracks fuel prices across the nation. Regular gasoline hovered under $3 at the Middleboro Avenue station for the past few days, bringing in drivers “non-stop,” said store manager April White. “I think we’ll see (prices) at $2.75 in the next week or so,” she said. Christine Travers, of East Taunton, stopped by to top off her tank after catching sight of the station’s sign announcing its startlingly low pump prices. “I think it’s about time,” Travers said. Prices in the Taunton area average out at $3.11. Last year at this time, regular unleaded gasoline cost $2.63 per gallon, according to figures compiled by AAA.
