The tone of the game — defense — was established early. So when Hudsonville Unity Christian’s Zac Billin fired home a goal in the 14th minute of the second half Wednesday night, he knew it was a big one. Billin’s goal turned out to be the game-winner as the Crusaders scored a 3-0 win over Holland Christian in the championship game of the O-K Green boys’ soccer tournament. “I knew the first goal was going to set the pace and I was kind of frustrated that I didn’t get one earlier,” Billin said. “I just kept trying and I finally got it and that set the pace for the rest of the game. “The whole right side was open the whole game and I had people looking for me and they finally got the ball to me. I hit it pretty good and it hit the keeper and went in.” Billin’s goal, his fifth of the season, was set up by a pass from Nick Holtrop on the left wing. Billin’s shot from point-blank range caromed off Seth Broekhuizen and barely reached the back of the net. Unity Christian got a second goal six minutes later when Travis Vegter beat Broekhuizen with a header off Zane Swanson’s corner kick. Zach Willis added an insurance goal with 3 minutes, 54 seconds to play to send the Crusaders to 17-2. “You like to get ahead and play with the lead, so that was nice to get that one,” Unity Christian coach Randy Heethuis said. The Zeeland East boys soccer team upset Hudsonville Unity Christian 3-1 on the road Monday. Unity Christian entered the match ranked No. 2 in the Division 2 state coaches poll and unbeaten in the O-K Green Conference. The Chix received two goals from Kevin McConnell and  one goal and one assist from Andrew DeWitt. It was a solid all-around effort, Zeeland East coach Todd Kamstra said. “We played as a team, and that’s what it is going to take against a big, strong, powerful Unity team, which is what they always have,” Kamstra said. “They were able to play the game with composure, created some opportunities and took advantage of them.” Goalie Chris Crothers held Unity Christian to one goal. Unity Christian running back Josh VanKempen rushed for four touchdowns to lead the Crusaders to a 41-21 victory over visiting Zeeland West Friday night. With the loss, the Dux fell to 0-3 overall and 0-1 in the OK Green. They reached the Division 4 state semifinals last season and won a Division 4 state title in 2006. “We just played poorly,” Zeeland West coach John Shillito said. “We played poorly on offense. We didn’t block people in the first half, and defensively we let up big plays.” The Crusaders jumped ahead early. After a Zeeland turnover on their first series, VanKempen ran 85 yards to pay dirt on Unity Christian’s second play from scrimmage. Following a Zeeland punt, VanKempen scored on another 85-yard run to put the Crusaders up 13-0. “You get a break with some big plays,” Unity Christian coach Craig Tibbe said. “To get some of those long runs was really beneficial.” VanKempen’s third score of the night, a three yard run, gave Unity Christian a 20-0 lead midway through the second quarter. “That was huge for us,” VanKempen said. “To take the momentum right away and then just roll with it.” The Crusaders took a 27-0 lead into halftime after quarterback Tom Snikkers connected with Cody VanKoevering for a 38-yard touchdown reception.
