By Ed O'Keefe A new radio ad that begins airing in Ohio on Friday employs some key biblical phrases in an attempt to gain support for Barack Obama among the state's Evangelical Christians. Former Congressman Tony Hall, an anti-abortion Democrat, voices the message produced and paid for by the Matthew 25 Network, an independent political Group run by progressive Christians. "We have lost thousands of jobs, and folks are struggling with bills this month, forget about next month," Hall says in the ad. "We need a president who sees those who are hurting and cares for the least of these. This is why I am supporting Barack Obama. As a child, Barack knew hard times too. He had to rely on food stamps to get by. And as a Christian, Barack believes God calls us to care for those in need. He has spent his life doing just that. ...

Public statements issued by local civil rights leaders questioning whether a Dallas police officer was justified in fatally shooting an unarmed man last week have exposed apparent infighting within the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. We received a statement from the SCLC's national office last night (full text below) saying that the Rev. Ronald Wright and the Rev. Peter Johnson (pictured at right) were not authorized to make statements on behalf of the SCLC. That's rather surprising, considering Mr. Wright and Mr. Johnson are well-known, trusted civil rights leaders in this area. In fact, Mr. Johnson, who marched with the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., brought the SCLC to Dallas nearly 40 years ago. Both men said last night they are surprised by the national office's stance, but that it changes nothing about how the two of them feel about last week's police shooting. "The issue is that we have a police killing down here and not about who uses the SCLC's name," Mr. Wright said. "We can walk away from the name, but we're still going to be defending the issue." The reality is that in this city, Mr. Wright and Mr. Johnson's statements probably carry just as much weight if issued on plain letterhead as they do on SCLC letterhead. And both men continue to stand behind their statements calling the shooting into question, whether the national SCLC stands behind them or not. --Scott Goldstein ...

clipped by: tabsey clipper's remarks: An absolute shocker. Clip Source: richarddawkins.net It's been an action-packed week for anyone who enjoys a good old row between science and religion, faith and reason, the men in white coats and the ones in dog collars. First we had physicists flicking a very expensive switch in their hunt for the God particle (although surely this is doomed to failure if they don't believe He exists). Then Prof Michael Reiss, director of education for the Royal Society, claimed teachers should discuss creationism with pupils and that "banging on about evolution" didn't change the beliefs of the devoutly religious. Next the Church of England decided to muddy the waters by saying sorry to Charles Darwin for criticising his theory of evolution. Now Christian Voice, the evangelical Group best known for leading opposition to Jerry Springer - The Opera, has tried to get in on the act by issuing a public apology to Britain's best-known atheist, Prof Richard Dawkins. In a parody of the Church's letter to Darwin, it declares that it has decided to issue a posthumo Tags: religion ...
