JENNIE McAlpine described it as a seriously scary experience. Even more frightening than bumping into John Stape again. I spoke to her yesterday about the Coronation Street special of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? Her father Tom is the chairman and she hoped to raise both cash and awareness by facing Chris Tarrant. “I’ve always wanted to go on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? “But it’s true what they say – it’s much harder answering the questions in the studio than sat at home,” she told me. “You can be absolutely certain of an answer but still have doubts. “It’s seriously scary when you’re sat there facing Chris Tarrant. “Samia and I just screamed our way through the whole thing but it was a fabulous experience and I’m so pleased to have done it. “I couldn’t have had a better partner.” She added: “You only get one chance in the hot seat and it’s even more nerve-wracking when you’re playing for charity. “We’ve also had to keep quiet about how much we raised since filming it. “There are so many people who need the unique support Mood Swings gives. “That was the whole point of going on the programme.” Samia was hoping to hit the jackpot for Cancer Research UK in the first of three ITV1 celebrity charity specials. Sally played for international anti-poverty agency Action Aid while Michael’s chosen charity was Zoe’s Place Baby Hospice in Liverpool. How much the Corrie stars won will be revealed when a new series of Who Wants To Be A Million ...

A Marlborough man charged with attacking his 79-year-old landlord with a frying pan will likely accept a plea deal rather than face a trial, his attorney said yesterday in court. Edward Ablazey, 46, is being held without bail on charges including attempted murder and home invasion after police say he attacked his landlord, Arthur Wallace, on Jan. 27. "This is likely to be resolved short of trial," attorney Thomas McKean told Middlesex Superior Court Judge Hiller Zobel during a hearing in Woburn yesterday. Zobel told McKean and Assistant District Attorney Kerry Aleman he would prefer to see the two sides reach a plea agreement. "It seems to be in everybody's best interest to see if we can work something out promptly," he said. "I think there's enough room for creative thinking here." Aleman told Zobel either she or Assistant District Attorney Chris Tarrant, who first handled the case but is on vacation, will appear before Zobel on Sept. 3 to discuss a possible plea deal. "I think it's important the meeting on the third be substantive," Zobel said. McKean said the sticking point in negotiations is the home invasion charge, which carries a mandatory minimum sentence of 20 years under Massachusetts law. Ablazey and another tenant, Fred Abelli, lived in the 52 Broad St. apartment complex owned by Wallace when the attack occurred, police say. Ablazey broke into Wallace's room, beat his landlord with a frying pan and threw Abelli into a ...

Chris Tarrant looks set to re-coup the £12m ($24m) he was forced to pay out to his ex-wife in a divorce settlement -- after landing a £1m a year radio sponsorship deal. The Who Wants To Be a Millionaire host, 63, will not even be employed by GMG Radio -- he will be paid by Nissan while free to work for other shows. The pay model has been brought over from US radio by Tarrant and his manager, Paul Vaughan, who believe it is unprecedented in the UK. He said, "It's a great deal for GMG. I think it could be big here. This sponsorship idea has been massive in the US." Tarrant will go up against Jonathan Ross' Radio 2 slot on Saturdays from July 26 -- and has promised "no playlists". He said he only came back to radio -- after quiting the Capital breakfast show several years back -- because he was given "editorial control". He said, "I'm going to play everything from Amy Winehouse to rare tracks by the Stones. I'm fed up with playlists." ...
