Last season, Chris Paul emerged as the best point guard in the NBA and perhaps the biggest single improvement in his game was his shooting. Paul shot just .430 from the field as a rookie in 2005-06, including a dismal .282 from three point range. He elevated those numbers to .488 and .369 respectively in 2007-08. His increased shooting range and improved accuracy obviously made him harder to guard and that in turn opened up some more driving and passing lanes, enabling him to lead the league with a career-high 11.6 apg, breaking Steve Nash 's three year run as the NBA's assist king (although I documented that at least some of Paul's playoff assist totals were inflated I do not dispute that Paul is a great playmaker). How did Paul improve his shooting skills? It would be silly to say that he is a natural shooter. If that were the case then his percentage would not have been so poor as a rookie. No, Paul has become a good shooter via the time tested, proven way to success in any field: hard work. During the San Antonio-New Orleans playoff series, Reggie Miller mentioned that Paul's regular pregame routine--conducted well before the start of the game, when he is on the court by himself--involves making (not just attempting) 151 shots from a variety of locations. Miller said that this is reminiscent of his own pregame routine, something that he developed when he was in college and watched some tapes of Larry Bird. I covered some Pace ...

Filed under: Hornets , Western , NBA Rumors , New Orleans If you (note: Hubie Brown voice) are the New Orleans Hornets and you have a point guard under your control who is going to be a free agent in a few years, and you know that you need him to be competitive for an NBA title in a smaller market, you lock him up. The Hornets -- despite notoriously "frugal" owner George Shinn 's ways -- are doing just that, as John Reid of the New Orleans Times Picayune is reporting that Chris Paul and NOLA are getting ready to reach an agreement on a max-deal four or five year extension. "We're going to try and get it done in the next 24 to 48 hours once I get down there,'' [Paul's agent Lance] Young said by telephone. "I think if you go back and look, there's nobody who did a three-year deal of all the max deals done in the last few years. I would say three years is not what he is going to do. It will be a four or a five-year deal.'' Paul's contract will range from $60 million to $80 million, depending on the length. Young said he and Bower spoke by telephone on Tuesday, the first day teams could begin negotiating contracts with free agents. Let's be perfectly clear: if you are the the New Orleans Hornets, you give Chris Paul whatever money and how many ever years he wants. He is most certainly one of the top five players in the league, and while many might take Kobe or LeBron if they were starting a team, I think Paul is a legitimate candidate ...

"We just need a solid point guard, a veteran guy who makes great decisions and hits big shots," From the man himself, Brandon Roy: Link NICE read on Brandon Roy and his thoughts on the upcoming season. How did we luck out to get this guy? IMO hw will be the reason that this team will stay together, players will gravitate towards him and want to be on his team. The Blazers first priority has to be getting this guy locked up for the full 6 years when his time comes up. Once he is a long term Blazer, LMA, Oden and the rest of the crew will follow suit, as the more you read of him the more you gain respect for the guy, that quiet confidence and underlying greatness, not just scoring or stats, but doing the little things that are necessary to win and make this team better. So far we have come from the days of having Zach as our leader, Reuben our energy, and Darius our core. People seem to question the validity of our team, but much as we were left for dead at the beginning of last season, we will be again underestimated IMO, even with our already lofty predictions. I would now like to pose the question of: What if?   In looking at our seasons to come, some here think that due to our youth and inexperience, we will take a while to grow into a team that is dominant in the postseason, saying that our time will not be until 2-3 seasons from now. Yet I would like to offer another version of that story, one that will hopefully be more truth ...
