Genzyme Corp. and Isis Pharmaceuticals Inc. said today that they finalized their agreement to give Genzyme exclusive rights to mipomersen, a Cholesterol Drug candidate discovered and developed by Isis. Under original terms of the deal, first announced in January, Genzyme of Cambridge bought five million Isis shares for $150 million and agreed to pay Isis a $175 million upfront license fee. The companies now say California-based Isis will contribute up to $50 million in additional development funding for mipomersen, bringing the company's funding commitment up to $125 million. After that, Isis and Genzyme will share development costs equally. In exchange for the additional contribution, Isis may receive $75 million in milestone payments early. Mipomersen is currently in late-stage trials to treat patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia, a severe form of high Cholesterol. The companies expect to apply with the Food and Drug Administration in the second half of 2010 for approval, and will approach regulatory authorities in Europe. The companies said other financial terms are unchanged under the final agreement. Isis is eligible to receive up to $750 million in commercial milestone payments and up to $825 million in development and regulatory milestone fees. Genzyme and Isis will share mipomersen profits on a sliding scale. The split will be 50/50 when annual revenue reaches $2 billion. As part of the relationship, Genzyme ...

Vytorin, the combination Drug prescribed to lower Cholesterol, sustained another blow today, when the author of a major clinical trial announced that the medication had failed to drive down hospitalization and death due to heart failure in patients with narrowing of the aortic valve. In the process, researchers in Norway detected a significant blip in cancers in the 1,800 subjects they followed. This is the second time in less than six months that Vytorin, the widely-prescribed -- and heavily advertised -- combination of the blockbuster drugs simvastatin (better known by its commercial name Zocor) and ezetimibe (known as Zetia) has fallen short on the goal of preventing heart attacks. In March, a study known as the ENHANCE trial found that Vytorin fared no better than a placebo at reducing plaque buildup on the walls of patients' arteries. Today's findings suggested something more ominous: the incidence of cancer -- and of dying of cancer -- was significantly higher in the patients taking Vytorin. Altogether, 67 patients on placebo developed cancer during the trial. Among subjects on Vytorin, 102 developed cancers of various kinds. Researchers involved in Vytorin trials believe the surprising blip in cancer rates among those on the Cholesterol-lowering Drug may be a statistical blip, but promised to continue to explore any link between the two. Vytorin did lower the risk of ischemic events -- heart attacks or strokes caused by blockage ...

(NaturalNews) In the latest example of absurd disease mongering to receive widespread media attention, the American Academy of Pediatrics Committee has announced that infants as young as two years old need to be screened for high Cholesterol, and children as young as eight years old should be put on prescription statin drugs. This absurd advice is being offered even though statin drugs have never been tested on children, nor approved by the FDA for use on children. The point of all this? To sell more high-profit prescription drugs, of course, to yet another group of victims being targeted for medication by Big Pharma. This is called "market expansion," and it's the only way Drug companies can continue to grow their profits and keep shareholders happy. As Drug companies continue to expand their profits and influence over the now-utterly-corrupt medical industry, they are also expanding their customer base by continuing to push medications for increasingly younger demographic groups. Not content to Drug more than half the adults in western nations, Big Pharma now sees children as its next area of market growth, in much the same way that soda companies once sought to persuade parents to feed their babies soda pop as a way to instill the desire for sugary beverages at a very young age. The conventional medical profession -- which has long since sold its soul to the Drug companies and now functions as little more than an elaborate pharmaceut ...
