It is possibly the first ever Australian choral symphony commissioned by a community - and debuted in the region it was written about. More than 25 years since two men set out to construct what would become a 250km long series of walking trails threading along the rugged south west Victorian coast, through the Cobbobbonee State Forest and along the Glenelg River, the Discovery Symphony inspired by these walks made its debut at the Portland Civic Centre. "It's fantastic that we've got this. We've got the Royal Melbourne Philharmonic Orchestra, which is the oldest orchestra in Australia, and we've got the Music Glenelg singers, which is made up of the Box Hill Chorale, Music Glenelg singers from Portland and we've even got a few singers from Millicent in South Australia," says Graeme Firth, event Director and Director of Music Glenelg. The process started four years ago, when Music Glenelg commissioned composer Dindy Vaughan to write the symphony; finding it hard to attract any sort of government funding, almost the entire project has been backed by donations from businesses and individuals in the community.
