Yesterday was a big, belt-busting day for food lovers in New York City. City noshers were able to hit two great events featuring local artisanal purveyors -- both the New Amsterdam Public Market by the South Street Seaport and the UnFancy Food Show , just a short J/M/Z ride away in Williamsburg. At the New Amsterdam Public Market , the inclement weather didn't keep crowds from waiting for a taste of Bent Spoon Ice Cream or chowing down on some onion focaccia from Hot Bread Kitchen under the safety of the overpass. Over in Brooklyn at the UnFancy Food Show , another packed-in crowd eagerly devoured McClure's spicy pickle spears and chocolate from NuNu and Taza Chocolatiers while the scent of grilled meats from Tamarack Hollow Farms wafted by. One of the more bizarre (and delicious) offerings from Grendelsweet Chocolate at the Chocolate Salon. In a rare escape from the insular, hater- and stan-filled world of local hiphop, Seattlest visited the realm of food lovers at TasteTV's Chocolate Salon on Sunday morning; the foodie realm is also insular, but significantly more sugary, and involves oddities such as chocolate virgins de Guadeloupe (from Alma ). Twenty-some Chocolatiers arrived with wares to share and sell, and as a judge and panelist for the event, we had more than our fill of traditional and startlingly creative chocolate concoctions while we attempted to rank our favorites. Thanks to broken air conditioning and an enthusiastic turn-out of euphoric (and then crashing) chocolate lovers, the conference room for the event at Bell Harbor Conference Center was a muggy swamp. This wasn't pleasant for the humans in the room, so we can only imagine how the truffles, poor melting things, were suffering. Fortunately, we were still able to focus our energies on the crazy flavor combinations presented to us. Soy sauce truffles from Petit Noir? Scrumptiously salty, and not in the usual fleur de sel kind of way. Kalamata olive truffles from Fiori ? Briny, smooth, and unforgettable. We even tasted Grendelsweet's crunchy white chocolate oatmeal stout/potato chip truffle--and liked it! Another photo and more about chocolate we loved most, after the jump! Though the innovative tr ...

Naples residents KC Rossi and Sher Kemp are turning their passions into profits as they prepare to launch a new product that will help support their favorite causes. Rossi and Kemp, president and vice president, respectively, started their business, Angelic Gourmet, 12 years ago in Kemp’s home. The pair quickly found success with the introduction of their Decadent Dippers gourmet pretzel line at national trade shows, outgrowing their home office within the first year.   The company specializes in double pretzel rods hand-dipped in high-quality chocolate and topped with premium candies, nuts and fruits. The niche they have carved out in the gourmet candy market has been enhanced by their status as a certified women-owned and women-operated company. Their product can be found in high-end retail stores such as Saks Fifth Avenue, Barney’s and Dylan’s Candy Bar in New York City, a three-story candy shop run by Ralph Lauren’s daughter Dylan. Business is cyclical, with summer months slow because chocolate can’t be shipped for reasonable costs during the warmer weather. This is one reason, Rossi says, they have been working on developing a new product that is not entirely chocolate-based. The company is preparing to launch a new popcorn product line at the upcoming Fancy Food international trade show in Manhattan on June 27. One of the divisions of the new line, called “Popcorn with a Purpose,” will have a portion of the proceeds earmark ...

Tribune-Review : With control of the chocolate market concentrated in the hands of so few companies, and the technical difficulties of entering the market and merchandising new products, "the chocolate candy product market was ripe for collusion," Giant Eagle claims. The supermarket chain contends the three suppliers increased average prices 16 percent from December 2004 to March 2005, even though there was no evidence of increases in raw material prices. Hershey and Nestle raised their candy prices by an average of 11.7 percent this year, Giant Eagle said. The suit cites a 2007 investigation by the Canadian Competition Bureau, which claimed Nestle, Hershey and Mars conspired to fix prices in Canada. Canadian authorities said an informant described meetings among top food executives that led to the price fixing. ...
