Les sénateurs UMP se sont prononcés aujourd'hui lors d'une primaire organisée afin de départager les trois candidats qui s'étaient déclaré au sein de leur parti pour briguer le poste très convoité de président du Sénat. Etaient en lisse Gérard Larcher, 59 ans, ancien ministre du travail et sénateur-mairede Rambouillet, Jean Pierre Raffarin, ancien premier ministre de JAcques Chirac, sénateur, et Philippe Marini sénateur-maire de Compiègne. Ce sont 158 sénateurs UMP qui étaient inscris pour voter à cette primaire. Tous ont voté, il n'y a eu qu'un seul vote blanc. Ainsi, Larcher a obtenu 78 voix, Raffarin 56 voix et Marini 17 voix. Le Sénat étant à droite (depuis le début de la 5ième République), Gérard Larcher est pour ainsi dire, assuré de son élection au poste de second personnage de l'Etat. Car le président de la Haute Assemblée est celui qui, en cas d'impossibilité du président de la République d'assurer son rôle, occupera l'interim . De fait occuper ce poste est quelque chose d'extrêmement important. Non seulement sur le plan politique, mais aussi sur le plan du prestige. Okay, I'm starting to sound like a WWF announcer (are you ready ruuuuuuumble?) but it is funny that the same Nobel season in which the Swedish chair of the literature prize committee asserted that Americans were not up to European standards saw the first award of the week, for Medicine, go to the French researchers whose claim to discovering the AIDS virus was embroiled in dispute with an American researcher, Robert Gallo, who was not included in today's award. I make no claims to being able to adjudicate the science of the controversy (despite growing up in a National Institutes of Health family, where my dad and Gallo both worked), but it does seem that despite Gallo's "disappointment" at not joining his French colleagues, the controversy (which required at one point an agreement between President Reagan and Prime Minister Chirac) has cooled and the scientific consensus has settled that Francoise Barre-Sinoussi and Luc Montagnier do have the legitimate claim to first scientific dibs here. Even Anthony Fauci, a high-profile administrator at NIH, "agreed there's no doubt the French scientists first identified the virus. He said they, and zur Hausen [who shared the award for his work on cervical cancer], deserved the Nobel. Fauci

We are the strongest and richest country in the world, and I have no desire to see us become a nation of cringing, self-loathing apologists. Yet it is also true that one can show grace in the exercise of power, rather than taunting those in a weaker position. The real model for this is George H. W. Bush, who was an exemplar of the intellectual/internationalist wing of the old Republican coalition. Bush 1 was a master of diplomacy; he won a worldwide mandate to kick Saddam Hussein out of Kuwait, and even get the rest of the world to chip in and pay for the conflict. That's real leadership--eschewing the cheap high of defiant action in favor of real results. I hated Chirac (that cheese-eating surrender monkey) and Schroeder as much as anyone, and I wish that Hugo Chavez and Vladimir Putin would be eaten by wolves. But we're the greatest country in the world, not a 3rd-grader. We should make decisions based on facts and what's good for our country, not based on whether someone hurt our feelings. That doesn't mean kowtowing to other countries. But it does mean treating everyone with respect, even those who don't deserve it, emphasizing similarities rather than differences, and reclaiming the moral high ground. I love America, which is why I want to see it restored to its traditional standing as the shining beacon of good in this world. The caption read: "Laura Bush: America's Secret Weapon." But observers of US politics have long seen Laura Bush as an asset to the White House, and that's maybe never been more evident than over the past few days. Last night, President Bush spoke for eight minutes to the Republican National Convention that will nominate John McCain as the party's choice to succeed him - as one colleague points out "wow. barely one minute per year in the White House." And Bush hasn't traveled to the convention, nor spoken out in McCain's favor much in the past few weeks, even though it's clear that Bush wants the Arizona senator, not Democrat Barack Obama, to be the 44th US president. That is fairly striking, but you have to remember that Bush is hugely popular among core Republicans (who give him job approval ratings somewhere between 60 percent and 80 percent, depending on the poll), but not so much among the independents that McCain needs to win the White House (Bush's overall job approval sits at about 30 percent).
