Restaurant lawsuit season is in full swing ! The latest is a $5 million lawsuit filed by a former employee against the Gramercy Park Hotel Chinese Restaurant Wakiya, which Times critic Frank Bruni once derisively described as “a swindle.” A Dominican Republic-born American citizen is suing the Owners for firing her for speaking Spanish when she was allegedly assaulted by a Spanish-speaking co-worker in the employee cafeteria. Her lawyers are seeking $5 million, which is “the sum she expected to earn at the hotel in a lifetime.” ...

Filed under: Consumer experience , Wal-Mart (WMT) , Costco Wholesale (COST) , Economic data Reports that Wal-Mart Stores Inc.'s (NYSE: WMT ) Sam's Club and Costco Wholesale Corp. (NASDAQ: CSCO ) were placing limits on the amount of staples such as rice and flour that customers can purchase have left me stunned . It makes me think of the food rationing that went during World War II. Food inflation is getting out of control. Prices for everything from cereal to pastries have jumped. Pizza shop Owners are getting squeezed by soaring costs for milk, flour and cheese. Rice prices alone have soared 68 percent since the start of the year, according to Reuters. Think of that the next time you order takeout from your favorite Chinese Restaurant. No wonder demand for Food Stamps is at a record . Riots over food shortages are breaking all over the world as farmers have found it more profitable to plant corn for ethanol instead of food crops. The corn-based fuel additive is a bad deal for both the economy and the environment, according to many experts. People are getting pinched every time they go to the supermarket, which is why they are stocking up at the warehouse stores where they can buy in bulk. At least they were until now. The companies, though, are trying to put a positive spin on the situation. 'Sam's Club said the large-sized bags of rice subject to the limits are typically purchased by its Restaurant owner o ...

Apparently, Mayor Bloomberg uses the word unconscionable so much that the Times poured 969 other words into analyzing the verbal tic. According to the article , Bloomberg’s U-bombing is definitely excessive; he drops the heavy pejorative in situations that don’t merit it, like when a reporter dared ask him if his trip to Israel was calculated to woo Jewish voters. (“ That’s unconscionable. You should be ashamed to ask that question ,” he reportedly snapped.) And when a Restaurant in Chinatown started charging non-Chinese patrons more, the Owners also found themselves stripped of conscience by the mayor. Linguists say that by using the word so much, Bloomberg may be sapping it of meaning – what guys in the language biz call “amelioration,” a sad fate that’s reduced words such as ‘awesome’ and ‘outrageous’ to washed-up has-beens lucky to be uttered ironically. O.E.D. defines “unconscionable” two ways: when describing a person, it means “having no conscience.” When it applied to actions, it's “showing no regard for conscience; not in accordance with what is right or reasonable.” A spokesman for the mayor, Stu Loeser, gets the last laugh: Mayor Bloomberg uses both meanings regularly, but not interchangeably. Gun dealers who sell multiple weapons to straw purchasers are unconscionable, in the mayor’s view. But the mayor also uses the second meaning of the word — excessive or beyond reasonable limits — at times, perhaps even mo ...

The group that brought us the popular Bellagio chain is clearly aiming to offer something grander and more upscale with the opening of Fontainebleau Cafe (风丹白露). Located on the nondescript corner of Hongxu and Yan'an roads, a block north of the backside of the Hongmei Pedestrian strip, this new venture combines Bellagio's distinctive flair for presentation, competent cooking, and beloved desserts and refreshments with a newer and broader canvas of regional Chinese cuisine. The result is an utterly delectable pan-Chinese offering that is bound to make Fontainebleau a preferred destination for diners located in the Hongqiao/Gubei area as well as for those of us closer to downtown. One of our favorite restaurants in all of China is Dan Gui Xuan (丹桂轩), and we were pleased to learn that Fontainebleau's head chef and general manager were brought over from the high-end Cantonese Restaurant chain famous for its high quality food and incomparable service. From an atmospheric perspective, Fontainebleau is best described as a Bellagio cranked up on steroids. With a sleek waterfall, a bevy of private dining rooms, and imported fixtures, it's clear that the Owners wanted to invest heavily in creating what has indeed turned out to be a beautiful Restaurant space. The selection and quality of the dishes also matches the decor. Gone is the former's core selection of traditional Taiwanese specialties; the new menu focuses on the food of south ...

Carol Driscoll wasn’t shocked to hear the Golden Star Chinese Restaurant in the Norwichtown Mall closed June 28. She had been its neighbor in the mall for more than 14 years when her employers, the Cutting Crew Salon, had its business there. But the salon moved to Marcus Plaza on West Thames Street last October. “There just wasn’t enough foot traffic there,” the Lebanon resident said. “But we’re busy here. There’s no such thing as too busy.” The Restaurant went the way of the Bee Bee Dairy Restaurant, Bob’s Discount Furniture and other former mall fixtures, either moving out or, in the case of the former Caldor department store, shutting down for good. The mall opened in 1968 and has 242,164 square feet of space. City tax records list the owner as Sea Norwich LLC. It is managed by the South Carolina-based Edens & Avent. Mayor Ben Lathrop said the city works closely with the firm, but there are only so many things a city can do to help, particularly in tough economic times. He said he plans to invite the mall Owners to the August meeting of his newly formed economic development roundtable to see where both sides can help each other. “They’re as frustrated as I am,” Lathrop said. “I’m very concerned about the mall. But you have to remember that it is private property, and we don’t have much jurisdiction. I hope they can market it well and get some tenants in there.” He said the property managers have had discussions with potential t ...

South opened its doors a few weeks ago and already business is booming. I arrived for happy hour at 5pm, quite relieved to see how well they'd filled in the space previously occupied by that hideous dim sum Restaurant which was a disgrace to all things Chinese. South looks amazing, with nice clear TVs on every wall, wide open spaces, comfortable seating, and tons of windows. I was rather impressed. South was opened by four men who you may recognize from Qs: Philip, Adam, Robyn and Chris (those bartenders that the ladies used to lust over at that bar up the street). The Owners personally have their roots in the south and decided to open a bar that reflects their southern charm. So besides being incredibly friendly and hospitable, they also serve some impressive southern treats: fried green tomatoes, hush puppies, voodoo shrimp, po' boys, crawfish etouffee, jumbalaya, it's all there waiting to be eaten. And it's damn good (see below). Of course, what you're all waiting for: was it full of douchebags? As far as I could tell through my mint julep goggles, no it wasn't. There seemed to be a nice mix of professionals, UCLA kids, bratty divas, and random drunkards with cameras like myself. The DJ was spinning some 80's stuff that excited most people there, which leads me to believe the crowd was actually over 24 years old (I didn't hear anyone say, "I don't know this, was this before I was born?"). We had a great time. Everyone ...

The Owners of Matthew’s Penfield Grill have submitted plans to the town’s building department for a bar and grill located in the former Kam Wah Chinese Restaurant at 2126 Five Mile Line Road. The plans are expected to keep the building’s historical federal-style exterior. They are available for review in the building department, 3100 Atlantic Ave. After the building plans are approved by the building department, all matters will be handled by the Town Board. Jim Costello, director of developmental services for the town, did not know the time frame on the project. ...

Tenants and area residents heard news about upcoming developments at the Sheridan Village shopping center on Thursday but will have to wait to find out the name of the center's new anchor store. Bill Bond of New York-based Emmes Asset Management, the firm that owns Sheridan Village, said the new anchor would be announced next week. The store, identified only as a supermarket, would be named pending completion of contractual details, he said. General plans were outlined for the 40 people in attendance who heard the prospective anchor would offer a 24-hour pharmacy and 24-hour dry cleaning service. "The plans sound good. They haven't revealed who's coming, but it's definitely not a Whole Foods or Trader Joe's," said Bobby Ing, owner of Ing's Chinese Express, a Sheridan Village Restaurant for the past 4 1/2 years. "They said that (the new anchor) was a high-end Midwest store. Everyone seemed pretty happy with what (management) had to say. I think it will help business," he said. Other Sheridan Village business Owners were happy to hear that change was coming. "Whatever they do will be an improvement," said John Valentine, owner of Panache, a Restaurant located in one the center's outlot buildings. "When you've only got 50 percent occupancy, you need to do something to attract business here." Mike Weisheit, manager of the Radio Shack store located at Sheridan Village, was optimistic about the new plans. "It's going to be cool. Peopl ...

Former pro wrestler Abdullah the Butcher may just run the coolest Restaurant of all time. It's called Abdullah the Butcher's House of Ribs & Chinese Food . Located in a converted 7-11 on the outskirts of Atlanta, the menu includes everything from rib tip and chicken combo dinners to almond chicken to some killer fish sandwiches. The sides include some great southern greens and, of course, the sweet tea is free-flowing. The food isn't bad. However, the highlight is the floor show. Unlike some other celebrity Restaurant Owners, Abdullah (nee Lawrence Shreve) frequently hangs out at his own Restaurant. While he's there, the former wrestler lets guests put quarters into his head . You see, Abdullah has deep grooves in his forehead from self-inflicted wounds he gave himself to bleed more in the ring. Here's what Atlanta alt-weekly Creative Loafing had to say : The best attraction is Shreve, who is usually present -- and pleasant. He kindly thanks people for coming and eating, hanging out in the dining area smiling and answering questions in his sweet voice. Abdullah's culinary split personality represented by two registers for orders -- an African-American woman at one, and an Asian woman at the other. If it's busy, line integrity disintegrates and either cashier will take your order. But the duality is strangely disturbing. Barbecue selections are kept simple: Ribs, rib tips and chicken. The ribs are smoked in a small building next to the ...
