Although the Vikings had four punters working out after Wednesday’s practice, coach Brad Childress attempted to downplay the situation today. He admitted that bringing in the four was “somewhat” related to Chris Kluwe’s failure to twice punt out of bounds against Reggie Bush on Monday. But Childress also said: “We’re working out guys all the time. [...] ...

CONCORD, N.C. - For much of this season, an owner's championship for Joe Gibbs Racing's No. 20 Toyota team seemed a forgone conclusion in NASCAR's Nationwide Series. Through the first 19 races of the season, the team - with drivers Tony Stewart, Kyle Busch, Denny Hamlin and Joey Logano - racked up nine victories and led the standings by several hundred points. Two important things have happened since the team's most recent victory, on July 4 at Daytona International Speedway, to change the dynamics of the championship race. First, crew chief Dave Rogers, car chief Richard Bray and engine tuner Dan Bajek were suspended indefinitely by NASCAR in August after officials discovered both JGR Nationwide teams trying to alter the outcome of a chassis dynamometer test at Michigan. As part of the penalty, both teams lost 150 car owner points. Second, even before the penalties were announced, the No. 20 team had been slumping somewhat. Since the July 4 win, the team has been winless in next 11 races and managed just two top-five finishes. ...

NASCAR team owner Richard Childress has been named the third-quarter recipient of the National Motorsports Press Association's Pocono Spirit Award. Childress was recognized for his partnership with Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in creating The Childress Institute for Pediatric Trauma. The Institute's goal is to help the search for ways to help save the lives of severely injured children and assist in their recovery. The Childress family has donated $5 million to the Medical Center to initiate the project. Wake Forest Baptist and the Childress family are working with a number of corporations and individuals to raise the additional $20 million to establish the Childress Institute. The Pocono Spirit Award recognizes character and achievement in the face of adversity, sportsmanship and contributions to motorsports. ...

Filed under: Vikings , NFC North Anyone who watched Reggie Bush glide into the end zone in the fourth quarter last night probably wondered why in the world the Vikings would let him touch the ball. Bush spent the second half using punt returns the way a painter uses a canvas so why wouldn't the Vikes just put the ball out of bounds and try to stop the mistake-prone Saints offense? According to Brad Childress , that's what they intended to do . He laid the blame on punter Chris Kluwe . "Both of those kicks are supposed to be out of bounds and when you say to somebody kick the ball out of bounds, that's what you expect to happen. That's what I expect to happen with a professional football kicker...If he can't do that, I'll find someone that can kick the ball out of bounds." If the call was to kick out of bounds then Kluwe has to put the ball out of bounds. Still, I'm not sure how wise is it for Childress to publicly rake one player over the coals. There were other guys on the field for Bush's punt returns and when Pierre Thomas nearly broke a pair of kickoff returns which points to general issues on the special teams. By directing blame at Kluwe, Childress may be trying to deflect some criticism from himself. His team pulled this one out but it was there for the Saints because Childress' offensive play calling remained predicated on minimizing return on gift turnovers. But there's no scapegoat for those issues. (H/T PFT )   Permali ...

The Way We Hear It After the team fell to 3-6 last season after a 34-0 loss at Green Bay, the Vikings appeared to be a directionless team that had given up on its coach. Not true. The Vikings rallied to win five straight games, including a 24-point road win over the eventual-champion Giants, before falling from the race. And we hear that despite a 1-3 start that has included a major QB change, the players remain on point with what head coach Brad Childress is pitching them. There appears to be no dissent in the locker room, despite the offensive struggles. The players know that other than switching QBs last season, there was no vast shift in offensive philosophy that led to the five-game winning streak, so the thinking is that eventually things will work out better — especially with OLT Bryant McKinnie returning from his four-game suspension and QB Gus Frerotte getting into a groove of being the starter every week. NFL Whispers PATRIOTS: There’s a growing faction in Foxborough that believes rookie QB Kevin O’Connell should be considered for the starting job if Matt Cassel continues to struggle. Having started four years at San Diego State, O’Connell’s playing experience actually trumps Cassel’s, and his teammates have perhaps even more trust in him than they do in Cassel, a fourth-year Patriot. As one team source told us, “you know (the players) aren’t crazy about Matt when the best they say about him is that he’s ‘enthusiastic.’ ...

For sure one of the most exciting, underdog, un-viking like performances I have ever seen in my life!!! I don't care how many reasons, or knocks or anything any reporter, or newspaper writer or viking fan can think of... a win is a win! We got lucky?! YEA right! How is 2 punt returns not lucky?... 'Skill?!'... Skill is catching a blocked fieldgoal in stride of a Touchdown, or sacking the QB while taking the ball away! I'll give the saints one thing outta this game... GREAT D! You took a top 3 running back in the league and completely made him disapear! But the saints D did give up a 7 play 75 yard drive that lead to a 27-27 tie! THAT RIGHT THERE was one of the most un-viking like drive I've ever seen! Thank you Gus and Berrian! 33 yard touchdown! Than when you thought it was over... when they missed their field goal for the lead, we have a chance.... and on 3&3 we do something So amazing! We pull off the biggest most UN-Viking like play ever! We go for the win! We didn't go for the 5 yard out and try to pound it out... WE THROW IT UP! And won the game cuz of it! Thank you Gus, Thank you Winfield, Thank you Berrian, Thank the Defense, Thank you vikings and Thank you Childress for coaching us to one of the biggest wins this season... amen! ...
