Ok, maybe the title will sound misleading when I tell you that the Wilmington News Journal is withholding the name of the juvenile who was arrested for the rape of a school employee at a Wilmington, Delaware high school (link): A staff member of Dickinson High School was raped in the girl’s locker room by a 15-year-old special education [...] ...

I believe I mentioned the story about Wasilla, Alaska, and rape-kits in passing, but it really deserves more attention than I gave it. When Sarah Palin was Mayor of Wasilla, her town instituted a policy of billing rape victims for the collection of forensic evidence required to pursue their cases. In case that wasn’t clear: The police [...] ...

I talk a lot about the Supreme Court and its cases. While watching Palin late last night, I struggled for several seconds to come up with a Supreme Court case other than Roe I disagreed with. And if I were truly on the spot, maybe I wouldn't have come up with one at all. So why should I, a layman Supreme Court geek, hold it against Palin that she couldn't name one off the cuff?I think my understanding of the Court -- which is much greater than most Americans -- is sufficient for anyone running for President or Vice President. So who cares?I eventually came up with the recent "no executions for Child Rapists" case, only because I'd seen an article about it earlier in the day (the Court had just refused to hear a new case on the same subject). But why is it that I couldn't come up with the Kelo case, which I've read in its entirety, and have strongly disagreed with, and have written about, and have discussed many times? It's how my brain works. Ask me my opinion on a specific case I disliked, and I can rattle it off, including the reasons why, and maybe even making specific references to the decisions, including who wrote which ones, who voted which way, and so on. But ask me to come up with some arbitrary decision I disagree with, and I'll struggle, because that is not how my brain catalogues things. I don't store them in "agree" and "disagree" folders in my mind. I imagine most people don't, including Palin. The dumbest thing, though, i ...

An error may prompt the Supreme Court to rehear a death penalty case. But its ruling should stand. An embarrassed U.S. Supreme Court indicated this week that, because of a statistical error in the majority opinion, it may reexamine its controversial holding of only three months ago that the death penalty for Child Rapists is unconstitutional. Fortunately, the justices can come to the same correct conclusion using a more straightforward rationale: that executing anyone for a crime other than homicide shocks the conscience. ...

Let me confess upfront that I'm not sure what to make about the validity of this new state-by-state survey of American attributes, but it is kind of fun to look at. As it happens, Alaska ranks last -- and I mean dead last, 51st, including the District of Columbia -- on both “agreeableness” and “conscientiousness.” Paging Todd Palin of the secessionist American Independence Party, Line 1! In fact, Alaskans also rank in the bottom four nationally in the study's other three attributes: “extraversion,” “neuroticism" and “openness.” Ouch: I mean, there just has to be a seasonal affective disorder component at work here. (Warning: The page with the interactive graphics loads slowly.) Now, we of course cannot extrapolate with any confidence from a statewide result whether Gov. Sarah Palin is a disagreeable, close-minded, neurotic or unconscientious person. But we do know that she is a self-professed pit bull personality type, and she did leave Wasilla in debt. Also, there's the small matter of America's hockey mom maybe not paying close enough attention to what her teenage daugher was doing with the high school hockey superstar -- not to mention she seems more concerned about the Child-bearing prospects of Rapists, even if her own daughter were raped , than the reproductive rights of those who were raped or the ability of law enforcement officials to collect evidence to make rape convictions ...

The Supreme Court today declined to revisit its June decision that it is unconstitutional to impose the death penalty on Child Rapists, although two justices said they would have reopened the case and two others sharply criticized the majority. The state of Louisiana and the Justice Department had asked the court to reconsider the 5 to 4 decision because the court was not made aware of what they consider a crucial element: that Congress in 2006 made Child rape a capital offense under military law. More on Supreme Court ...

Our petition has two points, listed below: 1. For Rapists who are convicted by evidence such as DNA, we demand mandatory life sentences with NO isolation and NO parole. 2. For Child Rapists convicted by evidence such as DNA, we demand the death penalty, with NO exceptions [such as lightening the sentence to  life with chance of parole]. Every two minutes, someone reports sexual assault. Thats' just in America, and that's just REPORTED cases. In reality, its much more than that, because so many victims are too afraid or embarassed to come forward. If a rape IS reported, there is only a fifty percent chance of arrest. Fifteen of sixteen Rapists walk free... Please, do something to increase protection for the victims of rape, and for the possible future victims. Thank you for your support. ...

Katha Pollit has some questions for Sarah Palin. § Suppose your 14-year-old daughter Willow is brutally raped in her bedroom by an intruder. She becomes pregnant and wants an abortion. Could you tell the parents of America why you think your Child and their children should be forced by law to have their Rapists' babies? § You say you don't believe global warming is man-made. Could you tell us what scientists you've spoken with or read who have led you to that conclusion? What do you think the 2,500 scientists of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change are getting wrong? § If you didn't try to fire Wasilla librarian Mary Ellen Baker over her refusal to consider censoring books, why did you try to fire her? § What is the European Union, and how does it function? § Forty-seven million Americans lack health insurance. John Goodman, who has advised McCain on healthcare, has proposed redefining them as covered because, he says, anyone can get care at an ER. Do you agree with him? § What is the function of the Federal Reserve? § Cindy and John McCain say you have experience in foreign affairs because Alaska is next to Russia. When did you last speak with Prime Minister Putin, and what did you talk about? § Approximately how old is the earth? Five thousand years? 10,000? 5 billion? § You are a big fan of President Bush, so why didn't you mention him even once in your convention speech? § McCain says cutting earmarks and waste will ...

Internet users, as well as editors making edits on Wikinews and Wikipedia, have been the victims of a recent hoax that talk show host Oprah Winfrey has been found dead in her Chicago, Illinois home. The rumors are considered to be a hoax, connected with the online group known as Anonymous. Other reports say that the website 4chan.org is responsible for starting the rumor which began to spread quickly over the Internet. The rumors started after a statement Winfrey made on a recent show, defending a United States Senate bill against pedophiles and Child Rapists saying a pedophile group has "over 9,000 penises" harming children. She was referring to a comment left on her website by an anonymous person claiming to be a pedophile. Wikinews can confirm through anonymous sources that the rumor was started by the group Anonymous and the website 4chan. ...

This is a letter I sent to a dear friend after he sent me the latest sob-story article on gays in the Middle East, penned by Peter Tatchell of the group Outrage! The article describes a host of horrific crimes committed against Iraqis because of their assumed sexual orientation. Before you judge me and my response, know that I am extremely concerned about sexual justice and variety in the Arab world, it's a topic I've written about extensively. I am equally concerned with distortions of that sexuality: It's true, the contents of the article you sent are extremely disturbing. The problem is the story is not as simple as Peter Tatchell represents it. Tatchell is an extremely unreliable propagandeer who has lied on record in the past. He was instrumental in over-publicizing the "murder" of two Iranian minors who had raped a Child, saying they died because they were gay, rather than because they were Rapists (For an excellent analysis of this controversy, see Richard Kim's article in the Nation ) Him and his friend Brian Whitaker (from the Guardian) have consistently exaggerated homophobia in the Middle East and have made very loud and messy "human rights" interventions into the Middle East that have hurt more than helped the people they were reportedly trying to save. Did you see how Tatchell said that, if you want to send money to these poor Iraqis, please send money to his organization, Outrage ? They have an interest in painting ...

Susan Pevec of Browndale was sentenced to two to five years in state penitentiary for assaulting her baby son by burning him. The 30-year old woman was found guilty by a jury, July 21, of endangering the welfare of a Child, intercepting a wire, two counts of false reports to law enforcement and two counts of simple assault. She was cleared of a count of fabricating evidence. According to trial testimony, she had left the second-degree burns on her 14 month old son in an attempt to gain full custody of the Child, back in November 2006. Using a videotape, she tried to pin the blame on the Child’s father, Christopher White of Johnson City, NY. Her lawyer, attorney Randolph Borden, gave an impassioned defense countering a Probation Department account that Pevec was “evil” and lacked any conscious. “I never met an evil person,” said Borden, adding in his legal career he has met murders, Rapists, Child abusers and those who committed aggravated assault. “But I can’t put them in the category of ‘evil’... like [mass-murderers] Jeff Dahmer and Charles Mason.” He said his client was part of a “long, nasty custody battle” and involved deep emotions from both sides of the family.  He said both sides have their arguments, but the truth is somewhere in the middle. The White family, Borden said, shows no fault of their own and is blaming Susan. This was not all the fault of his client, he insisted, but only his client is standing before the Court. H ...

This just might be the most brutal attack ad we've seen all cycle: Incumbent GOP Senator Gordon Smith, who's locked in a tough reelection fight, has a new spot that accuses Dem opponent Jeff Merkley of conspiring to help a Child rapist get released onto the streets. "Jeff Merkley," the announcer says sternly, "failing to protect our most vulnerable." Smith's dilemma is that he's a Republican seeking re-election a Democratic-leaning state that is highly likely to vote for Barack Obama. As such, his campaign tactics have veered back and forth between tying himself to Obama, or going extremely negative on Merkley. And this other ad takes the attack up yet another notch, featuring one of the victims of the rapist in question. "Jeff Merkley, you should have voted to protect victims," Tiffany Edens says, "not Rapists." Merkley spokesman Matt Canter told Election Central that Merkley had in fact voted for that very bill to extend the statute of limitations on sex offenders that Smith's ad says he voted against -- he just voted once against passing the bill on a procedural ground. "He's (Smith) taking one procedural vote, ripping it out of context," Canter said. Merkley is up with his own response ads, accusing Smith of running a sleazy and dishonest campaign. Check those out after the jump. The first ad features Kristi Gustafson, a police officer, telling viewers that Merkley does in fact support tougher penalties for sex offenders: "Go ...
