By Keith Barry The Chevrolet Volt has joined baseball and apple pie as an unassailable, non-partisan symbol of American can-do and know-how. General Motors won't start selling the plug-in hybrid for another 18 months (at least), but that hasn't kept it from becoming the most important political accessory since the flag lapel pin. The two leading presidential candidates have practically tripped over each other meeting with GM CEO Rick Wagoner, who stopped bailing water long enough to tell the candidates what they can do to help his sinking company build cars that won't destroy the planet. Both Sen. Barack Obama and Sen. John McCain have hailed the Volt as the very definition of American ingenuity, but McCain seems especially enamored by it.  “The eyes of the world are now on the Volt. It's the future of America and the world, ” McCain told a crowd of 500 GM autoworkers Friday at the GM Technical Center in Warren, Mich. The way McCain sees it, American-made fuel efficient cars will save both the environment and the economy, and he promises to make sure they're built if he's elected president. McCain's promised a $5,000 tax credit to people who buy zero-emissions cars, but since there aren't a whole lot of those on the road right now he's offering a graduated tax credit that would apply to lower-emissions cars like - you guessed it - the Chevy Volt. But his biggest initiative is a $300 million prize to whoever creates a first batter ...

General Motors executives may not be able to pull sales out of a hat, but top GM brass may have some sleight of hand planned to direct attention away from the automaker’s dire financial situation. Although Chrysler will soon launch hybrid versions of the Dodge Durango and Chrysler Aspen, the Auburn Hills automaker is still lagging behind the top automakers in hybrid technology and offerings. While we’ve heard rumors of GM using the 1.4 liter inline four with direct injection — and a turbo in some dresses — will power the Chevy Volt plug-in hybrid instead of the 1.0-liter inline 3 found in the concept car, the most recent reports seem to provide further hints this will be the case. GM [...] ...

The Cars.com blog says that the electric (well, hybrid, really) Volt will no longer include a 12-gallon gas tank to supplement the 40-mile-range battery. The new gas tank will be smaller: The original idea was to give the vehicle an extra 600-mile driving range once the lithium-ion battery pack ran out of its initial charge. The tank has been shrunk to hold fewer than 12 gallons. GM won't say exactly how many gallons it will now hold, other than a source saying, "We're working on that." ... The target now is to travel 360 miles after the initial charge wears off rather than 600. GM says because most cars travel 40 miles or less each day, there was really no need to have a 12-gallon fuel tank -- and the added weight -- to extend the range by 600 miles. If the average person drives 40 miles or less each day, and the battery can provide a 40-mile-range, then why not just dump the gas tank (and engine) altogether, make the battery slightly bigger (say, 50 mile capacity), and sell the Volt as purely an electric vehicle? ...

With the price of gas at all time highs and my car getting older and older, I find myself doing research on energy efficient vehicles. When I first started my search, I came by the interesting concept of the air car . Seems like a really cheap way to run a car, but I think that the technology has a long way to go before it reaches North America. The next logical step was to look at the feasibility of hybrid vehicles . As it turns out, they aren't economically feasible at the moment due to their high prices relative to their gasoline counterparts. Most recently, I stumbled upon the concept of a purely electric car. This car is being made by General Motors and due to be in production by 2010. They call it the GM-Volt (or Chevy Volt). ... What is the GM-Volt? The GM-Volt is a vehicle that propels itself using an electric motor that runs on battery power only . There are a few charging options which include using household power, an onboard small gasoline generator, and kinetic energy from using the brakes. If charging via household power, the batteries will charge in 6.5 hrs and can run for 40 miles/64 km straight before the gasoline charging generator will kick in to maintain 30% battery power. When the gasoline generator is used, the Chevy Volt can achieve 50mpg or 4.7L/100km. How is the GM-Volt concept different than a hybrid car? As mentioned above, the GM-Volt runs an electric motor with battery power in addition to a small gasoline ...

General Motors has a lot riding on the Chevy Volt, the brand's highly-anticipated midsize hybrid car.  Accordingly, the General has kept the automotive press informed of every change in the Volt's engineering (currently a hybrid, probably a plug-in hybrid by 2011), its production schedule (they're planning to sell it as a 2010, but might have the first model ready for their 100th anniversary celebration in September), its price ($40,000, perhaps ... Following word this morning the production version of the Chevy Volt will be shown in September, we hear the rocking-down-electric-avenue Lutz-mobile will also be featured in Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen . GM is accelerating development of the 2010 Chevy Volt in an attempt to ready the production version for a reveal as the company celebrates its 100th anniversary in September. Although we know GM desperately needs a cutting-edge Prius-killing success to stem the sales slide, given past RenCen rush jobs, we're not sure that setting a time deadline instead of a performance benchmark is the best way to move forward. A look at potential pitfalls after the jump. Exploding batteries: Remember the flaming plug-in Prius from a few weeks ago? No, that wasn't a manufacturer-sanctioned ride, but it still plainly shows the dangers inherent in releasing unproven technology. The fact that GM has yet to name a supplier for Volt's lithium-ion battery pack (though we hear it'll be either Continental or CPI) is another red flag for the power source. Embarrassing show mishaps: GM needs a win...and they need it to be a clean win, both on the stage and showroom floor. No panels falling off, stalls, massive oil leaks, fires, or collapsing spokes-robots on stage. Asking engineers to work 18-hour days in an effort to ready bleeding-edge technology for debut at a huge, public event, all while holding their jobs over their heads, is a recipe for disaster. Gas price crashes: Let's not forget November is rapidly creeping up on us. This is an election year . Don't be terribly surprised if gas prices suddenly fall to earth in a magical, ballot-influencing Bullwo ...

John McCain, the Republican nominee for President, wrapped up his tour by discussing the current U.S. fuel situation at the General Motors Technical Center. McCain spoke about a future increase in electric cars telling the GM workers, "I would support tax credits for Americans who choose to buy the Volt and other automobiles that put us on track to energy independence." The Arizona senator stated that electric vehicles like the Volt were "key and vital and integral part of our ability to break our dependence on foreign oil." Therefore, Americans should receive a $5000 tax break as an incentive to buy them. In the past, McCain has already given his support for federal funding in the research and development of electric vehicles. He has been adamant about individual states setting their own fuel economy standards as well. + Reuters: RPT-McCain backs tax credits for GM Volt, others ...
