Apple has a history of carriage trade pricing, and, although such practices cost it the PC market - while imbuing it with a certain cachet - the policy was enshrined in the original IPhone. For the first time Monday Apple sorta kinda changed its tune, so to speak, and started chasing the mass market with an entry-level $199 IPhone 3G with 8GB of memory and $299 for a model with 16GB of memory, in either case a $200 price cut compared to IPhone 1.0, $300 Cheaper than a year ago. read more ...

New IPhone 3G will be Cheaper IPhone 3G is one of the most frequently discussed gadgets on the web. And after Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference, that took place in San Francisco in June we’ve even more speculations about it. Modified IPhone announced there provides discrepant feeling and yet leaves some questions related to its upgrades. [...] ...

Filed under: Gadgets , Tech One day after spotting the "inexpensive" auto performance measurement tool Dynolicious for the IPhone, we've found another, and it's much Cheaper. Liberty For One has released its own automotive measurement tool called g-tac, and its going for just $4.99. For less than half the cost of the Dynolicious tool, you get times and trap speed for the quarter mile, as well as times for 0-60 and 60-0. The g-tac utilizes the IPhone's (and iPod Touch's) accelerometer to determine velocity, so the phone doesn't have to be plugged into the car. The tool also graphs out your last three runs so you can hone your launch technique over time. g-tac's feature list doesn't appear to have the robustness of the Dynolicious app, which also features metrics for Lateral Gs and horsepower, and there isn't much documentation to detail what g-tac can actually do. The early reviews aren't so hot either, as the first seven purchasers have averaged a rating of just 2.5 stars compared to the four star rating for the Dyonlicious app. Since Cheaper doesn't typically mean better, we intend to test both apps against an even more expensive hardware unit, and we'll let you know if either IPhone app is worth your hard earned digital dollars. Less than 2 months after the release of the Apple App Store, we’ve seen many success stories. Some of the applications became immediate hits, like Apple’s Texas Holdem, Band by MooCowMusic, and Enigmo by Pangea Software. I just started buying apps again, and I realised that some applications are now Cheaper than when [...] ...

Apple is having an event for reporters next week, and sent out invites with the words "Let's Rock" and the image of someone listening to an iPod. It doesn't take a Genius Bar employee to know what that's about. We're talking iPod, and we're talking price cuts. Apple is already running an iPod promotion for college students and faculty, offering a free iPod with every Mac. One analyst, Doug Reid of Thomas Weisel Partners, is concerned about the effect on margins , suggesting that the kids are buying the Cheaper $1,300 Macbook but then taking the more expensive iPod Touch as the freebie. Damn those students and their shoestring budgets! But another analyst, Piper Jaffray's Gene Munster, says Wall Street isn't appreciating the Mac and iPod unit sales that this promotion will produce.  Margins will take an even bigger hit with the expected iPod price cuts next week. Munster is expecting the iPod Touch price to fall to $200 from $300. Apple already warned us that a margin drop is coming, though it still hasn't explained exactly why. Is there something else on the horizon affecting the bottom line? We hear a lot about the IPhone these days, but it's the iPod that brings nearly a quarter of the company's revenue. Yet growth is slowing, and iPod sales are up only 7% from a year ago. Apple is still paying plenty of attention to the iPod, trying to keep the line fresh as competitors roll out new offerings. Price cuts are one way to do that, ...

Monster Cable has built an entire empire out of selling metaphorical snake oil to clueless customers who don't understand the rudiments of cabling physics: their high profit margin cables have been proven indistinguishable from Cheaper cables in countless blind audio tests. I never thought I'd see them selling liquid snake oil, though: they have just announced five separate products for cleaning your gadget screens... a different formula for your laptop screen, IPhone screen, GPS screen, camera screen or PDA screen! $10 each! Collect them all! They aren't all the same interchangeable formula of diluted Windex to Water! Pinky swear! Monster Cable thinks you need special cleaner for your IPhone, camera, cell phone, GPS, and laptop [Crunchgear] ...

Thanks to rising fuel prices and wage inflation in China, it's actually more expensive to manufacture and ship electronics across the Pacific for the American market than it would be to produce them domestically, according to a report from The McKinsey Quarterly. But IPhone assembly plants won't be coming to a depressed rust-belt community near you, because it's Cheaper still to produce those electronics in a Mexican maquiladora . Though I hear prison labor is a real bargain, and there's no shortage of that here in the states. [ Broadstuff ] ...

AT T said that it has “diligently” worked to provide “affordable options” for international roaming because the company found that the feature-rich mobile experience of IPhone “is indispensable to users”. However, AT T not necessarily made those plans Cheaper, but increased the monthly data volume with a corresponding price increase. There is still no unlimited data plan and 200 MB of international data volume is more than twice as expensive as most IPhone service plans. ...
