Yo, I love The 10 Commandments. Now, I'm the very last person to get all crazy Denise Matthews religious on everyone, but I love this frikkin' movie. It's overacted, it's colorful, & Ramses is hot. I've watched it probably every Easter since I was a little kid. I own it on DVD too. Rachel laughed at me after she found that out. (9 comments - 264 views) The star of such superlative and influential movies such as Omega Man, Ben Hur, El Cid, The Ten Commandments and of course the Planet of the Apes series, he was always a huge screen presence. My personal favorite role for him was as Miguel "Mike" Vargas in Orson Welles "Touch of Evil"- a great, great film by any measure. While his politics were certainly controversial, we should not forget that he marched in many of the very early civil rights marches in the early 60's, and following the assasination of Bobby Kennedy he actually supported President Johnson's gun-control initiatives! He also actively opposed McCarthyism and the Vietnam War. His views may have evolved later in life, but as backward as some of his later opinions may have been he will be remembered for the pleasure he brought to those who watched him on the Silver Screen. In Charlton Heston 's case, rare was the obit that didn't mention his pro-gun politics in the same breath as his larger-than-life roles as Moses, Ben Hur and "humanity's savior" (as one blurb on MSNBC egregiously put it, which I thought was a little-known Jesus role but turned out to be his "Planet of the Apes" astronaut, go figure). Anyway, meaning no disrespect, the movie I always remember him in (aside from "Touch of Evil," where his Mexican detective is priceless) is " Soylent Green ." Everyone who's seen it and most of those who haven't know the punch line, as it were. But it struck me that I remembered the movie as something more than a punch line, and when I asked others they, too, had vaguely troubling recollections of this 30-plus year old movie. So, Netflix to the rescue again: When "Soylent Green" came out in 1973, Richard Nixon had just begun his second term in the White House, paired with a corrupt Vice-President ( Spiro Agnew ), the Vietnam War was still going on its apparently endless course, there was a strong back-to-the-land movement among urban youth tired (or afraid) of modern life and its artificiality.
