A few days ago, I went to the 12th annual Charlottesville Vegetarian Festival with a good friend (who is also the founder and Executive Director of GreenRight , a new environmental/social-justice nonprofit). Coordinated by the group Voices for Animals and run entirely by volunteers, the event brings together people of all stripes and shades from throughout central Virginia for a smorgasbord of green goodies. After just a few moments at the Festival, you will be able to understand why it usually draws in about 6,000 visitors, making it one of the largest vegetarian festivals in the United States. In modest Lee Park in downtown Charlottesville, and spilling over into surrounding parking lots, local natural foods stores, organizations of all sorts, restaurants, and other vendors provide an unbelievable variety of goods, information, and entertainment. Add to that live music and animal adoptions, plus free samples and fun activities like face painting, and you can easily spend the entire day with other folks who are interested in livingly compassionately towards animals and the planet. Just to give you a snapshot: Walk up to the table of the Alliance for Community Choice in Transportation and take part in a poll of transportation methods used by attendees. Depending on your mode of locomotion (biking, driving alone, carpooling, etc.), you will get a colored rock that you then put in a clear tube. As the piles grow and the tubes fill, ...

Last Thursday, I finally ended my summer concert drought and my long wait for catching My Morning Jacket in 2008. The band played Charlottesville Pavilion, my hometown venue. It's a great outdoor pavilion tacked onto the end of Charlottesville's downtown pedestrian mall and an awesome place to see show. The crowd was a bit sparse as the show got started. Perhaps it was the Thursday night bill or the band's attempt at being super punctual so as to play the maximum amount of music; they actually came on a bit late. But after over two and a half hours of music, the place had filled out nicely and both the crowd and band seemed to love every minute of it. With several weeks (months?) of anticipation for this show, I may have over-hyped it and set my expectations a bit high. Although the show was not necessarily a game-changing, bar-raising experience, it was definitely a fantastic concert and one that left me buzzing for days. To put it simply, I My Morning Jacket puts on a hell of a rock 'n' roll concert. They've captured some of the best aspects of the classics, like Led Zeppelin and the Who, but they've updated them for the millennial set with their own brand of rock. So I thought I'd try something new with this review and offer up a quick hit-list of show highlights. "Evil Urges" opener. This song is killer. That phasing keyboard lick is stellar and the chorus (part leading to "I'm ready for it now") somehow hits the most perfect ...

Obama campaign volunteers Adrienne Ghaly and Emily Cone-Miller signed up new voters outside the Lucky 7 convenience story on Market Street on voter registration deadline day, Monday, October 6. PHOTO BY COURTENEY STUART No one doubts that voter turnout will be high in the upcoming high-stakes presidential election, but in Charlottesville, voters are poised to smash records. Put it this way: in the 2004 presidential election, Charlottesville had 21,000 registered voters. Yesterday morning, there were 27,595 registered voters in city limits— an increase of more than 30 percent— and according to Charlottesville City Registrar Sheri Iachetta, there are about 1,300 applications left to process. “We expect to top 28,000,” says Iachetta, who calls the increase “unbelievable,” even more so because she estimates there are only 36,000 residents over age 18, including felons and non-citizens. That number, she says, is based on the 2000 census, and the Charlottesville population has remained relatively stable. Albemarle has also seen an unusual rise in voter registrations, says County Registrar Jake Washburne, even relative to growth. In the 2004 presidential election, the County had 58,479 registered voters out of an adult population of about 70,000 (the most recent census estimate came in 2005 and put the County’s over-18 population at 70,642). Currently, says Washburne, the county has 66,305 registered voters, and he expects “we’ll probab ...
