The alto saxophonist Arne Domnérus was one of the Swedish jazz greats. We have to be honest and admit that the Swedes left the British out of sight when it came to adapting to bebop, the new music that Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie introduced in the mid-1940s. Sure, Tubby Hayes, our tenor player, was a sensation when he played in the land of the cool, but they had half a dozen tenor players who were almost as good, and as far as the other instruments were concerned, they trumped us at every turn. ... Yesterday would have been the 88th birthday of Charlie "Bird" Parker. This great alto player is often considered the founder of Be-Bop music. Before Bird in the 1940's, Jazz was primarily big-band music, dance music that was perhaps the most popular genre of it's time. Bird featured a hard driving quartet and quintet format with an emphasis on improvisation, freeing the soloist to stretch out. As I listen to the 2 Bird originals on this set, each under 3 minutes, it amazes me how much music is packed into these tracks. The rest of the set features modern day jazz artists that have covered Bird's compositions as well as artists that have been influenced by his music. Actually, every great jazz artist that has played this idium since Bird, has taken some of his chops from Charlie Parker. It was the musical Mecca for African Americans, a conservatory of jam, and here, parallel to its gestation in New Orleans and Harlem, was born jazz. Charles Parker, Jr. ( August 29 , 1920 – March 12 , 1955 ) was an American jazz saxophonist and composer . Parker is widely considered one of the most influential of jazz musicians, along with Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington . Parker acquired the nickname "Yardbird" early in his career, [2] and the shortened form "Bird" remained Parker's sobriquet for the rest of his life, inspiring the titles of a number of Parker compositions, such as " Yardbird Suite " and " Ornithology ." Parker played a leading role in the development of bebop , a form of jazz characterized by fast tempos, virtuoso technique, and improvisation based on harmonic structure. Parker's innovative approaches to melody , rhythm , and harmony exercised enormous influence on his contemporaries. Several of Parker's songs have become standards , including "Billie's Bounce," "Anthropology," "Ornithology," and "Confirmation". He introduced revolutionary harmonic ideas including a tonal vocabulary employing 9ths, 11ths and 13ths of chords, rapidly implied passing chords, and new variants of altered chords and chord substitutions. His tone was clean and penetrating, but sweet and plaintive on ballads. Although many Parker recordings demonstrate dazzling virtuoso technique and complex melodic lines — such as " Koko ," "Kim," and "Leap Frog" — he was also one of the great blues players. His themeless blues improvisation "Parker's Mood" represents one of the most deeply affecting ... Source: www.pegasusnews.com --- 26 days ago

I’ll begin with a 1930s New York joke. An immigrant couple from New York takes a boat cruise to Hawaii. They argue: Is Hawaii pronounced “ha-wah-yee” or “ha-vah-yee”? To settle their dispute, they approach the first passerby they see after docking. ”Is it “hah-way-yee” or “hah-vay-yee,” they ask. Hah-vay-yee” the passerby tells them. “Thank you” [...] ...
