By Bill Sammon The extraordinary political sensitivities associated with Hurricane Gustav are premised largely on the disputable notion that President Bush callously dithered while poor blacks in New Orleans were swamped by Hurricane Katrina three years ago. “George Bush is our Bull Connor!” thundered Rep. Charlie Rangel, New York Democrat, in September 2005. “If you’re Black in [...] ...

"I went to bed smiling and a woman put [the smile] there," a Republican mother of three told me this morning. An Asian-American Democratic woman, who is going back to school for nursing, and has twin first graders says, "Ooh, I really really like Sarah. Her speech rocked." A self-described Liberal Democrat, a blue collar working mother in her thirties, asked her thoughts on Gov. Palin before the speech: "I dont know enough about her." A female Democrat in her sixties, after the speech: "I don't like her. She seems phony. She's acting. I don't trust her." Those who are calling Governor Palin McCain's Hail Mary pass are making the same mistake they made in calling McCain road kill a year ago. Palin pointed that out in her speech last night. McCain is not only being helped by Charlie Black and Karl Rove on strategy, but he is also a strategist of the rarest kind himself. When the chips are down, he is the most motivated to survive. Think about August, 2007. Here was my analysis for a Boston Globe Op-Ed then, called by many a reach: "What McCain has in common this year with Gore and Kerry is that the press anointed all three as front-runners before the campaign began. The expectations for such "early favorites" are often based on polls taken so early that only the candidates with existing name recognition place well. These expectations are also impossible to meet. As obscure candidates become known and gain a little ground in the poll ...

Talk about starting the Edinburgh Fringe on a high. Charlie Victor Romeo at the Udderbelly's Pasture is the most hair-raising piece of verbatim theatre I've ever seen: a re-creation of six real-life airflight emergencies, transcribed from their Black box recorders. It's such a white-knuckle ride that I found myself on the edge of my seat. At the end, you stagger away feeling like an exhausted survivor. ...

Anyone who has just flown in for the Edinburgh Fringe might be tempted to tear up their return ticket after checking in to Charlie Victor Romeo. Adapted from transcripts of Black-box recordings of actual airline emergencies - its title is the military phonetic alphabet code for "cockpit voice recorder" - this will surely count as one of the scariest shows to hit this year's festival. Staged by the Collective:Unconscious theatre company from New York, it's more of a docudrama than a play, but none the less riveting for that. ...

John McCain has cast himself as King Lear in a party full of ambitious sons, not daughters.   Had he picked one of them,  --  Mitt Romney,  Tim Pawlenty, Tom Ridge, John Thune,  Mike Huckabee -- he'd have gotten himself some protection, as he'd have a hyper-ambitious gent as his running mate actively working towards victory. But McCain didn't do that -- he picked a daughter far afield. Who loves Sarah Palin? Conservative activists, because they identify with her. Is Palin sufficient protection? Or is there going to be a heck of a lot of GOP infighting, backtalking, lackluster surrogate action come October? Does Palin have allies among the national bench of talking insiders?   My guess is she does not. She certainly did not have any internal allies before the pick. Charlie Black wanted Mitt Romney, Lindsey Graham wanted Joe Lieberman, etc.   There is a chance that McCain has made some new enemies, or in Romney's case, a re-enemy.   I know that most GOP strategist and consultants and politicians are reading the talking points. I know that many of them publicly say they're happy about the pick. I know that many of them are privately bewildered. I know that conservative activists by and large ARE happy about the pick. But whereas Obama managed to select one of the non-Hillary options that didn't produce inflammation, you might not be able to say the same about Palin. ...

Here's a little tidbit from the GOP convention we forgot to blog last night. From Rudy Giuliani's speech : "Tough times require strong leadership, and this is no time for on the job training." ...and here's top McCain adviser Charlie Black on Sarah Palin last week : "She's going to learn national security at the foot of the master for the next four years, and most doctors think that he'll be around at least that long." To be clear, this is more than just a fun little gotcha. It's another sign of how absurd and untenable McCain's argument that our commander in chief requires national security preparedness now looks in light of his choice of Palin as back-up president. Either the president needs decades of experience to be effective or he doesn't. Choosing Palin as Veep candidate is effectively an admission by McCain that the latter is the case -- or, worse, it means McCain put someone within reach of the presidency that he believes isn't up to the job. There's just no other way to look at it. ...

There's lot of talk about social conservatives rallying around Sarah Palin and defending her and her family from the evil media, but the pick, for John McCain, was supposed to be about what Palin did... not what her family has done... the risk is that people begin to see Palin's Alaska as like Clinton's Little Rock.  The McCain campaign can't let Palin's public image be defined by the media. Many Republicans were already nervous about McCain. On Friday, the Palin pick soothed one set of Republicans -- the grass roots activists. But the Palin pick unnerved another group of Republicans: the Hagels, the Lugars, the Krauthammers, the Powells -- the realist foreign policy crowd. (Think Lugar was thrilled by Charlie Black's interpretation of the vice-presidency as a four-year tutelage at the feet of the master?). Set aside the content matter of today's news: what we've really learned today is how little we know about Sarah Palin. And that makes for more nervous Republicans. Karl Rove this morning, before the news broke, told the Maine delegation that Sarah Palin was a risky choice for vice president. If McCain's pick was about reducing uncertainty by soothing the base, today's news suggests that McCain's dark horse pick increases uncertainty in, well, unpredictable ways. And the road ahead is rocky. Troopergate and an investigation with all of its vagaries is scheduled to roll out in the heat of the campaign. There's the Alaska Independ ...
