It started as a light-hearted attempt to promote America as a gay-friendly tourist destination during the Pride London parade. Throughout its history, South Carolina has been famous for many things: slaves, prohibition and the Ku Klux Klan among others. Now, much to the fury of its senators, posters on the London Underground are proclaiming: "South Carolina is so gay". ... Source: www.charlotte.com --- 13 days ago
A 24-year-old man swimming near Charleston has been bitten on the forearm by a shark. Isle of Palms Fire Chief Ann Graham told The Post and Courier of Charleston that the man was swimming there around 2 p.m. Friday when he said the shark jumped out of the water and bit his arm. The man was taken to the hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries. His name has not been released. Authorities warned swimmers to stay out of the water but did not close the beach, where a 37-year-old man said a small shark nipped his hand last month. The waters at Isle of Palms were closed in August last year after a man and a 9-year-old boy reported shark bites within hours of each other. ... Source: www.charlotte.com --- 12 days ago
The police chief of South Carolina's largest coastal city says he isn't trying to mount an anti-drinking campaign, but merely wants the city streets to be safe. The Charleston Post & Courier reported Sunday that Chief Greg Mullen said drinking isn't a top priority for his force, despite criticism of efforts to stop outdoor drinking. Some people have accused police of unfairly cracking down on patrons enjoying wine during a recent art gallery walk. But Mullen said that he wants the city to be safer, noting that there have been fewer homicides and assaults. He also said the city hasn't had a fatal car crash that involved alcohol. "We are not spending an inordinate amount of time on this alcohol issue," Mullen told the newspaper. "We're very clear on what our priorities are." Mullen said policing outdoor drinking is part of the larger campaign to promote safety and points to alcohol use that contributes to crimes such as domestic violence, car accidents and vandalism. Police also say drunken people can be targets for robbers or rapists and risk being hit by cars if they stumble into streets. But some residents say they don't see why well-behaved people can't have a sip of beer or wine. "I think it is ludicrous to go after middle-age, middle-class people walking along Queen Street with a glass of wine on an art walk," downtown resident Robert Stockton said. "That is not causing crime." ... Source: www.charlotte.com --- 5 days ago
South Carolina transportation officials have asked for money from the federal government to study whether the first-ever car pool lanes in the state should be built on Interstate 26 in Charleston. State Transportation Secretary Buck Limehouse told The Post and Courier of Charleston that the idea of adding high-occupancy-vehicle lanes began as the area geared up for a project to widen part of I-26 to eight lanes. HOV lanes are dedicated to vehicles with at least two people in them. Limehouse says the study will cost about $4 million, and HOV lanes could be scrapped if the report says they won't work. But if they are a good idea, Limehouse says HOV lanes could come to Columbia and Greenville too. ... Source: www.beyond.com --- 6 days ago

My husband and I had a goal to not eat at any chain restaurant during our vacation in Charleston, as this is truly the only way to experience the true charm! Our last night took us to Hominy Grill, and it ended up being our favorite meal of the week. Once we sat down, our super-friendly waitress brought a complimentary small carton of boiled peanuts to begin our meal. Their fried green tomatoes come on top of homemade ranch dressing, and were a fabulous appetizer. After perusing the side and vegetable menu, my husband ordered a vegetable plate. Lima beans are prepared with chopped baby portabellos and carrots. Carrot coins are served chilled in a delicious sweet dill glaze. You have to eat the grits (regular or fried cheese grits) when you come here, and the potato salad is unlike any you've ever had. It is prepared with red new potatoes, chopped celery, and a bit of jalapeno (I think) for just the right amount of kick. I had the grilled eggplant, red pepper, red onion, and goat cheese sandwich and it was incredible. Their sweet tea is some of the best in the South, as is their cornbread. The atmosphere is friendly, relaxed, and comfortable and we thoroughly enjoyed our meal. Reservations are recommended for dinner; the place fills up quickly inside and outside on their patio. This is the place we cannot WAIT to visit again! ... Source: TheState.com --- 4 days ago
Officials seek money for study; project could serve as a model for Columbia and Greenville Charleston — State transportation officials have asked for money from the federal government to study whether the first-ever car pool lanes in South Carolina should be built on Interstate 26 in Charleston. The idea of adding high-occupancy-vehicle lanes, often called HOV lanes, began as the area geared up for a project to widen part of I-26 to eight lanes. The lanes are dedicated to vehicles with at least two people in them. “It’s not a done deal, and we might run into so many obstacles that we find it doesn’t work, but it’s worth trying,” said state Transportation secretary Buck Limehouse. About 140,000 vehicles daily travel on the stretch of I-26 being widened, causing bottlenecks during rush hour. ... Source: www.charleston.net --- 13 days ago
