Democrat vice presidential candidate Joe Biden gives significantly less money to charity as a percentage of his household income than the average American. In fact, in the last ten years, Biden and his wife have averaged 98 percent less in Charitable Donations than the typical household in their income bracket. Such was revealed Friday when Biden released his family's tax returns for the last ten years. As the Obama/Biden ticket champions itself as the candidates for the little guy and the downtrodden, one has to wonder how much press coverage this story will get. As marvelously reported by the TaxProf Blog Friday (emphasis added, grateful h/t Jennifer Rubin ): Despite income ranging from $210,432 - $321,379 over the ten-year period, the Bidens have given only $120 - $995 per year to charity, which amounts to 0.06% - 0.31% of their income . [...] It is jarring that a couple earning over $200,000 per year would give as little as $2 per week to charity. This giving compares very unfavorably to John McCain, whose tax returns show that he gave 27.3% - 28.6% of his income to charity in 2006-2007 . During the same period, the Obamas' tax returns show that they gave 5.8% - 6.1% of their income to charity. Perhaps the Obama-Biden campaign needs a new slogan: " Change You Can Believe In (As Long As Someone Else Pays For It )" Update : Independent Sector reports that 89% of American households contribute to charity, with an average contrib ...

I am deeply disgusted by the lack of personal financial commitment that Senator Joe Bidden shows to the domestic violence victims he claims to care about. A troubled economy hasn’t stopped Americans from donating their money to charity organizations, shows an annual report from the nonprofit Giving USA Foundation. In fact, Charitable Donations reached a record level of $300B in 2007. This fascinates me. The existence of this type of generosity offers both philosophical and practical justifications for America’s sole remaining unique political [...] ...

Today the Starfish Greathearts Foundation, an international development charity that improves the health and well-being of children orphaned and made vulnerable by HIV/AIDS in South Africa, launched a new model for Charitable Donations, marking a notable trend toward transparent, interactive and choice-based giving. Starfish and Virgin Megastores are celebrating the donor model launch with "Generation: HOPE" an exhibit of photographs taken by children who, with the use of Digital Blue cameras, took photos of people and things in their lives that represented hope. Search and Give , created by Microsoft, is an Internet search engine, like Google and Yahoo. But, unlike Google and Yahoo, Search and Give generates revenue for participating schools and Charitable groups. The Scholastic Inc. Web site puts it this way: "This new program provides schools with a free and automatic way to raise funds. There is no door-to-door selling, no bake sales to prepare for, no money to collect, and no orders to add up. Best of all, Microsoft manages all of the program's administration. The money raised is automatically sent to each school." You can log onto www.searchandgive.com , sign up, and select your school, or charity. Then, every time you use the search engine, your group earns a "ticket." Microsoft will make annual Donations to your group based on the number of tickets its supporters generated. Don't expect to get rich quick. The donation amounts to a penny for every search up to 500 searches per user, per month. But even pennies add up. According to the letter Bernero got, the program generated $280,000 for various schools around the country in its first year. ...

The artist Joe Alterio has just announced a fantastic benefit that we heartily support. He is re-launching his project, Robots and Monsters: A Charitable Menagerie , trading original, custom-made art for Donations to EFF! Here's how it works: visit Joe's site, give him $50 along with three words or phrases to work from, and he'll send you an original work of art. EFF gets the proceeds, and Joe's adds a copy of the creation to his ever-growing menagerie of amazing creatures for everyone to enjoy. Joe launched Robots and Monsters last year as a benefit for the SF AIDS Foundation. With the help of other artists, that project was so successful that it raised over $10,000. Now Joe is ready to support a new cause: For almost 20 years, the EFF has been on the good side of 1st Amendment fights on the web, and considering that [Robots and Monsters] couldn't happen without this amazingly wonderful and scary tool that we all use now, we figure we owe them one. Joe is planning to produce a limited number of originals for this project, so act quickly to get your original robot art to benefit EFF! Thanks for the creative support, Joe! ...

Community Resources Network is conducting its 18 th annual appeal as a “first response” agency helping local families in Wareham, Rochester, Marion, Buzzards Bay and Onset who are struggling to keep up with rising costs of utilities, heating fuel, and food bills. “Telephone calls for assistance this past August, which is usually a relatively quiet time, exceeded all other months in 2008,” Joanne Mahoney, a coordinator of Community Resources Network, said. “One can only imagine the demand during winter months.”  Concerned with the demands on CRN in these very difficult economic times, a generous benefactor of CRN has donated a substantial amount of money and has challenged others to consider families in need by donating as generously as possible. “Community Resources Network is successful because the public continues to care,” Mahoney said. “Donations and an enthusiastic volunteer staff make a difference.”  Mahoney said by the end of the year, CRN would have provided direct assistance to more than 1,000 local families and individuals. She said 98 percent of all Donations go to directly support local families. “Community Resources Network appreciates all past support, and counts on the public’s Donations to continue its work to help families and individuals struggling in difficult times,” Mahoney said.  CRN is a non-governmental, privately funded Charitable organization. Donations can be made out to Community Resources network, and sent ...
