Here's evidence of thawing relations between the Baptist General Convention of Texas and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary: Randel Everett, executive director of the BGCT is scheduled to speak in Chapel at Southwestern on Oct. 15. Click here. You'll need to scroll down to access the October schedule. It wasn't so long ago that conservative Southwestern Seminary wasn't allowed to have a booth at the BGCT convention exhibit hall. But Everett, still in his first months as executive director, seems aware that many conservative churches in the big tent BGCT want their state convention to be on better terms with Southern Baptist Convention entities, at least for mission work. ...

Hoping to get the game in before Hurricane Hanna can make landfall, Smithfield-Selma has moved up its football game with Chapel Hill to Thursday at 7:30 p.m. The game between CHHS (1-0) and the (1-1) Spartans is rematch of last year’s state 4-A playoff game. Chapel Hill won that second-round game in Smithfield, 13-7, in what some Triangle observers thought was an upset. The Spartans finished 2007 at 7-6, having won 21-16 in Chapel Hill during the regular season. Also Thursday, Cardinal Gibbons (0-1) will be at Carrboro (0-2), and East Chapel Hill (0-2) will host Cedar Ridge (1-1). Each of those games is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.   ...

Three University of North Carolina football commitments played in Smithfield-Selma's 22-12 victory over Smithfield-Selma on Thursday. Chapel Hill defensive tackle Jared McAdoo was very impressive. He rushed for 112 yards on eight carries and caught two passes for 48 yards. He had touchdown runs of 76 and six yards. LITTLE ROCK — Today the 8th Circuit Court of Appeals affirmed the decision of a federal judge in finding that the Watson Chapel School District (WCSD) violated the First Amendment rights of students when they disciplined them for wearing black armbands to protest the student apparel policy. In October 2006 the ACLU of Arkansas filed suit against WCSD alleging the district violated the free speech rights of those students and a federal judge agreed. The school district appealed to the 8th Circuit Court of Appeals, and today that Court upheld the lower court's ruling. The Court said that by winning this lawsuit, the student plaintiffs did something "that benefitted all of the students in the school" and "vindicated" students' right to free speech. ...

On mission from God (or Peskin?) a San Franciscan lawyer is heading up efforts to build a nearly to-scale replica of the the Porziuncola , a Benedictine Chapel built in Assisi, Italy in 1209. This happening in North Beach, unsurprisingly— the $2.9 million construction project will stand within the National Shrine of St. Francis of Assisi, a building that said lawyer, Angela Alioto, was partially responsible for reopening in 1998. The reproduction will remain strikingly similar to the original, as a very, shall we say, fastidious Alioto has brought in not only Italian masons, fresco artists, and woodworkers who are closely following hundreds of photographs of the original, but also stones from the actual caves where St. Francis found his original construction materials. Curious but not Catholic? Rest easy: the Porziuncola reproduction will be open to all on September 24th. &#183 Porziuncola Chapel re-created in San Francisco [SF Gate] [image via National Shrine of Saint Francis of Assisi ] ...
