Has anyone been in Hoi An etc in early to mid October? I know it's the wet and sometimes stormy season but I'm in Vietnam from October 5th and of course would like to spend some time in Hoi An. Should I try my luck or expect to miss the centre? Advice would be appreciated. Thanks Cazna ... [Posted by cazna - Aug 17, 16:53] ... Source: www.iht.com --- 9 days ago

One of the last (we hope) Asian strongmen OLD-SCHOOL Asian strongmen have become an endangered species. The future of even Central Asia's venerable strongman tradition has been in doubt since the death in 2006 of Turkmenistan's Sapurmurat Niyazov, who called himself "Turkmenbashi", the father of the Turkmen. The daddy of them all, Genghis Khan, is probably spinning in his grave at Mongolia's turn toward namby-pamby multi-party democracy. Indonesia's Suharto and the Philippines' Ferdinand Marcos are long gone, their countries now democracies, albeit messy ones. The top dog in Myanmar's regime, General Than Shwe, is old, ailing and--it is said--circled by would-be successors. In other authoritarian states like China, Vietnam and Laos, the party, rather than any particular dominating individual, is in charge. ... ... Source: clipmarks.com --- 10 days ago
clipped by: tommy2balmy clipper's remarks: Still only quarter the price of beef Clip Source: www.reuters.com PHNOM PENH (Reuters) - The price of rat meat has quadrupled in Cambodia this year as inflation has put other meat beyond the reach of poor people, officials said on Wednesday. With consumer price inflation at 37 percent according to the latest Central bank estimate, demand has pushed a kilogram of rat meat up to around 5,000 riel ($1.28) from 1,200 riel last year. ($1 = 3,900 riel) Spicy field rat dishes with garlic thrown in have become particularly popular at a time when beef costs 20,000 riel a kg. Officials said rats were fleeing to higher ground from flooded areas of the lower Mekong Delta, making it easier for villagers to catch them. "Not only are our poor eating it, but there is also demand from Vietnamese living on the border with us." He estimated that Cambodia supplied more than a tonne of live rats a day to Vietnam. Rats are also eaten n Thailand, while a state government in eastern India this month encouraged its people to eat rats in an effort to battle soaring food prices Tags: rat meat ...

The Republican presidential nomination his at last, John McCain makes his case for the presidency to the GOP convention and the nation after his surprise choice for vice president, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, energized delegates with a rousing speech. Searing, at times sarcastic, but always smiling, Palin used her speech Wednesday night to cast the White House as the logical place for a man of McCain's character. The 72-year-old began his national service as a 17-year-old Navy midshipman, before spending 5 1/2 years as a Vietnam prisoner of war and the past 26 years as a member of Congress. "In politics, there are some candidates who use change to promote their careers. And then there are those, like John McCain, who use their careers to promote change." said Palin, toying with the Central theme in Obama's campaign. Palin's 19-year-old son, Track, ships out for Iraq next week with his Army unit. The governor was unflinching as she contrasted McCain's military record with a lack of armed service by Obama and his running mate, Sen. Joe Biden of Delaware. "There is only one man in this election who has ever really fought for you in places where winning means survival and defeat means death - and that man is John McCain," said Palin. ...
