After the identification of the brown widow spider in New Orleans, LA, and southern Mississippi, surveys in the southeastern United States were conducted from the fall of 2006 through February 2008. We found populations of brown widow spiders in Georgia, Texas, and multiple localities in southeastern Louisiana and Mississippi. In Mississippi, specimens were collected as far north as a county bordering Tennessee. If that forecast holds, it would be named Marco. Previous blog: At least some good has come of all the tropical systems that have whacked the U.S. coastline this year: The overall drought situation has eased considerably. According to Douglas Le Comte, a drought specialist with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the amount of area suffering from drought has decreased by almost 30 percent since mid June. “During the past 12 weeks there has been a pronounced reduction in extreme to exceptional drought in many areas of the country,” he said in a statement released last week. NOAA notes that Tropical Storm Fay had the greatest impact, easing drought conditions in Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, the Carolinas -- and, of course, Florida. Zig-zagging across the state in August, it brought Lake Okeechobee back from a major deficit. Hurricane Gustav ended the drought in Louisiana. Tropical Storm Hanna did likewise in Central North Carolina and south-Central Virginia. And Hurricanes Dolly, Edouard and Ike significantly reduced drought conditions in coastal Texas, NOAA said.
