February 15, 2008 Friday It was the day after Valentine's Day. I didn't sleep the whole night that night. I thought, "I'll stay up the whole night tonight to know what it'll be like to stay up the whole night", and since I had to get up early in the morning to catch my flight anyways, I didn't get any sleep that night. (I'm glad that I didn't sleep though. ;) I don't know how others do it, but I was feeling abit grumpy in the morning. :D We were planning to go to Yogyakarta , which is located in south Central Java. It is a small province in Java island and is the only province in Indonesia that is still governed by a sultanate. The capital city of the province is "City of Yogyakarta". The flight to Yogyakarta was at 9:15am, and we left for the airport from the hotel at around 6:30am, just in case there was traffic. But there wasn't much traffic that day, so we had an hour and 30 minutes more at the airport. So I spent the time browsing a bookstore there. I bought: Michael Crichton - Next and Philip Pullman - Amber Spyglass (I haven't read that third book yet). The flight was 10 minutes late. It takes about an hour to arrive to Yogyakarta. Yogyakarta's airport was just like Yangon's Airport before it was renovated. We had to step down into the airfield and a shuttle bus will come and take us to the airport. Modern approaches for information technology based blended education utilize a variety of novel instructional, computational and network resources. Such attempts employ technology to deliver integrated, dynamically linked, interactive content and multi-faceted learning environments, which may facilitate student comprehension and information retention. In this manuscript, we describe one such innovative effort of using technological tools for improving student motivation and learning of the theory, practice and usability of the Central Limit Theorem (CLT) in probability and statistics courses. Our approach is based on harnessing the computational libraries developed by the Statistics Online Computational Resource (www.SOCR.ucla.edu) to design a new interactive Java applet and a corresponding demonstration activity that illustrate the meaning and the power of the CLT. The CLT applet and activity have clear common goals; to provide graphical representation of the CLT, to improve student intuition, and to empirically validate and establish the limits of the CLT. The SOCR CLT activity consists of four experiments that demonstrate the assumptions, meaning and implications of the CLT and ties these to specific hands-on simulations. Jakarta - A quake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale hit Indonesia's Central Java, but there was no tsunami risk or reports of damage, the country's meteorological agency said on Sunday. The epicenter of the quake was 10 km (6.2 miles) deep, 135 km (84 miles) southeast of Wonogiri district in Yogyakarta province, said Setyono, an official at the Meteorology and Geophysics Agency. The ancient royal city of Yogyakarta was devastated by an earthquake that killed more than 5,700 people in May 2006. "There was no potential tsunami and also no reports of damage," Setyono, who only uses one name, said. "The quake was felt as far as East Java, but the intensity was low." Borobudur is a ninth-century Mahayana Buddhist monument in Magelang , Central Java , Indonesia . The monument comprises six square platforms topped by three circular platforms, and is decorated with 2,672 relief panels and 504 Buddha statues . A main dome is located at the center of the top platform, and is surrounded by seventy-two Buddha statues seated inside perforated stupa . The monument is both a shrine to the Lord Buddha and a place for Buddhist pilgrimage . The journey for pilgrims begins at the base of the monument and follows a path circumambulating the monument while ascending to the top through the three levels of Buddhist cosmology , namely, Kamadhatu (the world of desire); Rupadhatu (the world of forms); and Arupadhatu (the world of formless). During the journey, the monument guides the pilgrims through a system of stairways and corridors with 1,460 narrative relief panels on the wall and the balustrades . Evidence suggests Borobudur was abandoned following the fourteenth century decline of Buddhist and Hindu kingdoms in Java, and the Javanese conversion to Islam . It was rediscovered in 1814 by Sir Thomas Raffles , the British ruler of Java. Borobudur has since been preserved through several restorations. ProofHQ is a web-based application for uploading, annotating, commenting and approving proofs with controlled access for multiple clients. It's not Mac-specific, but it's worth mentioning considering the large portion of Mac users (and TUAW readers) who fit into the creative/design category. It doesn't work on the iPhone, (why would you want to upload and proof on an iPhone, really?), but it's fully Safari-compatible and Mac-friendly. Using ProofHQ's upload page or the Java-based Uploadr, you can send PDF, PSD, GIF, TIFF, JPG, BMP, Word and Powerpoint files and have them converted into Flash-based proofs at full quality. There's currently no support for Pages or Keynote documents, but you can export PDF versions and upload those. PDF files can be multi-page, and vector support is on the way. Comments and various levels of approval can be added from the viewer. You receive a public url, private url and embed code. The embed code makes it easy to incorporate ProofHQ into other collaboration systems such as Basecamp or Central Desktop . There's also direct API integration with Basecamp. Spoken word followers of The Poets’ Asylum endured the sounds of silence for a while, until the group found a new home to host its Sunday night reading series. The series, held until mid-June at The Q Café in Worcester, has now moved to Jumpin’ Juice & Java, which, as the name implies, serves all manner of coffee, smoothies and other jazzy bevs for poets in motion. “We are actually hoping to make it our permanent venue,” said Bob Gill, co-organizer of The Poets’ Asylum, which has sponsored poetry readings and other literary offerings in Central Massachusetts for 17 years and coordinates the Worcester Poetry Slam Team. Gill said The Poets’ Asylum struck up a relationship with Jumpin’ Juice & Java when it hosted The Poets’ Asylum’s regional poetry slam – a competitive event in which readers can win prizes and move to higher-level competitions. Gill said the reading series starts again Sunday, Aug. 17, with featured poet Molly Meacham. Meacham, a teacher in the Chicago public school system, is a fixture in poetry slam circles.
