I didn't get to watch the whole thing last night - it ran too late for me, but I did get to see a few of the early goals in the Houston Dynamo match against Club Universidad Nacional A.C. (that's the official site to match the houston site and it is in spanish - you can read the wikipedia article on the team in english.) Apparently this game was part of what they are calling the CONCACAF Champions League. Obviously this does not include teams that are of the same caliber as the UEFA Champions League - but hey it's what's going in my neck of the woods. I try to be involved in 'local' sports and CONCACAF is just that for North and Central America. I haven't watched enough soccer to really be able to say a lot about a game other than this was fun to watch. I have watched enough to say that. When I had just started watching soccer my response was that of many Americans. It was boring. They just would kick the ball back and forth. Now that I've been watching it for a while I am really beginning to enjoy it, but I know I'm still missing out on many finer points. It's sort of like the last time I went to a baseball game with a Brazilian friend of mine. She hated it - more than anything because she had no idea what was going on most of the time. I tried to give her updates on the highlights but it didn't seem to help much. I tried to buy a Pumas jersey when I was in Mexico City this spring. The puma logo looks cool and it is an amazing campus ...

It's hard to look past the strangeness of tonight's vice presidential debate and assess it as if it had been a normal debate. But it's our job to try. I thought Sarah Palin made one huge, Central mistake -- and I expect it to be reflected in surveys asking voters who won (as it is already, indeed, reflected in a CBS snap poll of uncommitted voters indicating that they saw Joe Biden as the winner). Her error was that she hardly talked at all about policy solutions, except when the debate got onto the subject of energy and offshore drilling. There, she seemed on terra firma. But on everything else -- the financial crisis, the economy in general, health care, the war on terror -- she gave little more than promises of reform and "maverick"-y governance. People are paying attention to the candidates in this election. Americans understand the ...

Many Americans have heard of Croatia and the war that redrew the map of Central Europe nearly 20 years ago, but few know what a presence Croatian-Americans have in the Pacific Northwest. Seattlelites will get a chance to learn more at CroatiaFest in the Seattle Center’s Center House this weekend. The festival’s theme, “Croatian Hands at Work,” celebrates a century of Croatian contribution to local mining and manufacturing. It includes panel discussion with Croatian-American miners and a historical photo exhibit showing pictures from all over Washington State. Festival attendees can also learn about travel in Croatia from Gretchen Strauss of the TV show Rick Steves’ Europe Through the Back Door, genealogy from UW graduate Barbara Budinich Starkey and traditional folkdance from the Živili Dance Company. CroatiaFest committee director, Alma Plancich, emigrated to the United States with her family after World War II. She said it was this latest wave of emigration, just after the Balkan War, that brought greater attention to the country and lead to the festival’s beginning in 2004. “There was a need,” said Plancich. “After the war was the perfect time ... to focus on our culture.” The Dubrovnik Symphony Orchestra will play a mix of classical music and Croatian- and American-composed pieces. The Vela Luka Dance Ensemble will perform traditional dances with Spanish and Italian influences, said John Lovric, who started dancing in the ens ...

Auf Facebook gibt's eine Gruppe mit diesem Namen und einer Liste mit 68 Eigenschaften eines echten New Yorkers. Ich gehe hier auf die Punkte ein, die ich zumindest halbwegs interessant fand. 1.You say "the city" and expect everyone to know that this means Manhattan. Ja, natürlich. Was soll es denn sonst meinen? 11.You think Central Park is "nature." Ich habe da schon Kraniche und Waschbären gesehen und Rotkehlchen auch. Das ist Natur, wie sie im Buch steht. Quadratisch (naja), praktisch, gut. 17.You go to dinner at 9 and head out to the clubs when most Americans are heading to bed. Vor 21:00 Uhr machen die Restaurants doch gar nicht auf, oder? 18.Your closet is filled with black clothes. Nur zur Hälfte. Also nur zur Hälfte zutreffend. 20.You pay $5 without blinking for a beer that cost the bar 28 cents. Ich habe auch schon 6 bezahlt. DAS KOSTET DIE NUR 28 CENTS????? 21.You take fashion seriously. Darüber scherze ich nicht. 26.You've gotten jaywalking down to an art form. ich finde es immer noch lustig, dass es im Englischen ein eigenes Wort für "bei Rot über die Ampel gehen" gibt. 27.You take a taxi to get to your health club to exercise. Wie soll ich denn da sonst hinkommen? -- Stimmt gar nicht mehr ich bin eine trockene Taxisüchtige. Naja, halbtrocken. 28.Your idea of personal space is no one actually standing on your toes. The United States breezed into the final round of World Cup qualifying with unusual ease. DaMarcus Beasley scored a pair of first-half goals, Landon Donovan and Brian Ching padded the lead early in the second, and the Americans routed Cuba 6-1 Saturday night. Jozy Altidore and Oguchi Onyewu added goals for the United States in the final minutes as the game got sloppy and the Cubans tired. With two semifinal-round matches remaining, the Americans (4-0) already have secured a berth in next year's six-nation finals of the North and Central American and Caribbean region. The top three teams in the finals qualify for the 2010 World Cup, and the No. 4 nation goes to a playoff against the fifth-place team in South America for another berth. Ranked 21st in the world, the United States is seeking its sixth straight appearance in soccer's showcase event. The Americans, who won 1-0 at Cuba last month, were playing a nation ranked that hasn't been to the World Cup since 1938 and is ranked just 98th. And the advantage only increased when Cuba's Yoel Colome was ejected in the 42nd minute for cutting down Donovan, a foul that got him his second yellow card. ...

Somalia authorized foreign powers on Wednesday to use force against pirates holding a ship loaded with tanks for $20 million ransom, raising the stakes for bandits being watched by the U.S. Navy. There was no indications, however, that the Americans or anyone else was preparing to take action. Last week's hijacking of the Ukrainian cargo ship MV Faina - carrying 33 Soviet-made T-72 tanks, rifles and heavy weapons - was the highest profile act of piracy off this Horn of Africa nation this year. Several U.S. ships patrolled nearby and American helicopters buzzed overhead. Moscow also has sent a warship to protect the few Russian hostages on board, but it was a nearly week away from the coast of Central Somalia where the Faina has been anchored since Sept. 25. Most of the 20 crew members are Ukrainian or Latvian, and one Russian has died, apparently of illness. Spurred by the latest hijacking, at least eight European Union countries offered Wednesday to form a new force to help protect shipping in the increasingly dangerous waters off Somalia, France's defense minister said - a move that eventually could give the Navy crucial support in the area. A U.N. Security Council resolution in June gave permission to nations to send warships into Somalia's territorial waters to stop "piracy and armed robbery at sea" if such operations were taken in cooperation with the weak Somali government in Mogadishu. When asked whether the U.S. was pleas ...
