Halls Memory Garden is finally on the verge of a fresh start with a new owner. The Cemetery on Salem Church Road in Knoxville will be sold in a two-part auction beginning Aug. 19 with sealed bids, and concluding a week later with a live auction. According to Dean Farmer, the receiver appointed by the Chancery Court of Knox County, only qualified Cemetery operators will be allowed to bid. The successful buyer will have room to expand by up to 4,000 lots, free and clear of any liens or deeds of trust. Halls Memory Garden has been in receivership since 2003 as a result of a fraud investigation that revealed improprieties by the previous owner. “The new owner will have a clean slate and room to expand,” said Farmer. “It took a great deal of work to get us to this point, but the court has resolved issues such as ownership of the existing lots.” McLemore Auction Co. LLC of Nashville, has been named by the court to conduct the auction. The auction will be in two phases, according to Will McLemore. The auction company will contact qualified individuals and companies and invite them to enter sealed bids, which will be opened on Aug. 19. Then, qualified bidders who submitted sealed bids will be invited to take part in a live auction at 2 p.m. Aug. 26. A local Marine who came to the U.S. from Poland will be buried in America as a hero who gave his life for a country of which he was not a citizen. Marine Pfc. Dawid Pietrek, 24, of Bensenville, who was killed last month in Afghanistan, was buried this week at Arlington National Cemetery, according to the U.S. Department of Defense. Pietrek was buried at Arlington July 1 with full military honors, in front of several family members who were provided transportation, passports and accommodations necessary to come from Poland to attend the burial ceremony, Marine Sgt. Dmitry Novak said. Pietrek was killed June 14 along with three other Marines in the Farah Province of Afghanistan when their vehicle struck a roadside bomb, according to the U.S. Department of Defense. After coming to the United States on a Green Card in 2004, Pietrek lived for a short time in an apartment in Bensenville with a relative. He worked for Family Care Agency in Chicago, where he worked assisting the elderly and families with sick relatives, including an Elmhurst family. In June 2007 after enlisting in the Marines, Pietrek went to California. Bill Rohn of Elmhurst said Pietrek lived with the Rohn family for several months, caring for Rohn’s sick father-in-law. Rohn said the Marine “became part of his family” and saw the military as a faster way to achieve citizenship. ...
DELPHOS — Police are investigating the vandalism of St. John’s Cemetery that occurred Sunday night or the early morning hours of Monday. At 8:53 a.m. Monday, Cemetery caretaker Larry Carder notified the police department that damage had been done to 23 separate tombstones. Seven of the 23 tombstones were chipped or broken. Several of the larger monuments on bases were broken off and toppled. “It had to have been more than one person to do that,” Carder said. Delphos Granite Works has estimated damage at $12,000, which includes replacement value, repairing chips and labor. Wanda Rigsby has been cleaning gravesites at the city Cemetery in Jasper since she was a little girl. "I didn't want to, but my mama made me come with her," Rigsby said.
