A team of researchers have made a discovery that is important for producing large quantities of Cellulosic Ethanol, a leading candidate for a sustainable and secure alternative to petroleum-derived transportation fuel. For the first time, the group has genetically engineered a thermophilic bacterium, meaning it's able to grow at high temperatures, and this new microorganism makes Ethanol as the only product of its fermentation. ...

Filed under: Emerging Technologies , Ethanol , USA During a conference call this afternoon, Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm announced that the U.S. DOE will invest $26 million dollars in the state's first Cellulosic Ethanol production plant, being built by Mascoma in the Upper Peninsula . Granholm, speaking with a sore voice thanks to a cold, said that this is the first time that Michigan has gotten a DOE grant in partnership with the private sector. Granholm was joined by Senator Debbie Stabenow, Senator Carl Levin, Congressman Bart Stupak and others, both in Lansing and Washington, D.C., during the call. Mascoma CEO Bruce Jamerson called it a great day for Michigan, Mascoma and the country. Stabenow said that a new federal $1.01 per gallon tax credit for Cellulosic Ethanol should do for the second-generation biofuel what the previous 54 cent a gallon credit did for corn Ethanol. All of the speakers highlighted that this plant will be a job creation engine for the UP, and Levin emphasized that this is a bit of good news amid a lot of bad economic news. Novozymes was awarded a USD 12.3 million contract from the U.S. Department of Energy (DoE) today to improve the enzymes necessary to produce Cellulosic Ethanol. Novozymes’ project DECREASE (Development of a Commercial-Ready Enzyme Application System for Ethanol) aims to improve the performance of Novozymes’ most advanced enzyme system, to further reduce the cost of Cellulosic Ethanol production. Under the terms of the 2.5-year contract Novozymes has committed to increase the efficiency of the enzymes used in the conversion of Cellulosic biomass to Ethanol by two-fold. In combination with internally funded research and development to reduce enzyme production costs, this work will enable Novozymes to supply new and even more cost-efficient commercial cellulases in pilot, demonstration, and commercial plants by 2012. Novozymes will match the DoE funding dollar for dollar, bringing the total investment of the research project to USD 25 million. Filed under: Emerging Technologies , Ethanol , Flex-Fuel , AutoblogGreen Exclusive If you get into a room with a lot of people who make up part of the Cellulosic Ethanol industry, things can get a little technical. This is the situation here in Chicago for the Platts 3rd Annual Cellulosic Ethanol and Biofuels conference. A few hundred representatives from a lot of companies in the Cellulosic Ethanol "space" (I hear this term so often these days - the green tech space, the green car space, etc. Why?) are here and the rapid-fire presentations are truly talking to the choir, as it were. Sure, attendees disagree exactly how to best make Cellulosic Ethanol, but they all understand, well, the space. So, join me as I share a bit about what was said and done at the conference. This post will cover the first few seminars, when some of the broader questions about Cellulosic Ethanol and the market were taken up. I'll have more posts later about other aspects of the discussion. Jump past the fold for more.
