The Zoning Board of Appeals last night continued two public hearings on a pair of 100-foot Cell phone Towers proposed for Saratoga and Crestview drives, one requiring a zoning variance, while it awaits additional information. After six months of vocal protests from residents, the Planning Board approved site plans for both Towers in April, but Omnipoint Communications was required to come before the ZBA for two special permits. Omnipoint Communications, a subsidiary of T-Mobile, plans to erect a monopole tower on the crest of a wooded hill near a 40-foot water tower off Saratoga Drive, which is an estimated 65 feet away from homes on the street. Brian Grossman, an attorney for Omnipoint, came before the board requesting a zoning variance to a town bylaw, which requires a fall zone of two times the height of a structure. A fall zone is an area around a Cell tower that is devoid of buildings. Grossman said monopoles are extremely safe and reliable in bad weather. "Monopoles have survived, where other structures have not survived tornadoes or hurricanes," said Grossman. Neighbors residents questioned the reliability of the monopole, specifically in high winds and icy conditions. Mark Calvanese, whose home is nearby, asked if the tower could withstand a high winds, and said it was difficult to calculate how strong the wind blows at 100 feet up. Other residents said there could be significant damage to homes in the region and to other ... Source: www.kansas.com --- 37 days ago
