He looks pretty darn good five carries and 24 yards into his Bengals career. His shortest carry, a 2-yard gain on third-and-1, might have been the most impressive. It looked like blitzing LB Zach Thomas was going to make the play in the backfield, but Benson showed good burst to get to the hole. ...

Filed under: Bengals , AFC North , NFL Free Agency The Bengals are 0-4, which isn't totally shocking given how the organization has been slowly devolving into a caricature of itself in recent seasons. Some of that is head coach Marvin Lewis ' doing, but there's enough blame to go around for owner Mike Brown to get a heaping serving. Whatever, it is, as they say, what it is. And today, in an effort to help turn things around, the team signed Cedric Benson . Hip Hop Hurray. Benson, the Bears former 2005 first-round pick, was cut during preseason for not being very good, and for various off-field legal entanglements. So with Chris Henry fully operational after serving a four-game suspension, this seemed like the perfect time to introduce Benson to the fold. The club also placed running back DeDe Dorsey on injured reserved, which probably also had something to do with the timing of the move. Of course, the Bengals could've just kept Rudi Johnson and there wouldn't be a need for Benson, but, honestly, unless Johnson can pass block and stuff the run on defense, Cincy would still be 0-4. I'm sorta surprised it took Benson this long to get an opportunity -- he's just 25 years old and has played in just 35 NFL games. But questionable work habits and doubts about his ability to play nice with others scared teams off, apparently. On the upside, at least he isn't a thief , so there's that. Meanwhile, Shaun Alexander continues to wait .   Per ...

Excerpts from an American-Statesman story about Cedric Benson coming tomorrow: Cedric Benson waits for a call. No calls come. He was in New Orleans recently. He worked out for the Saints. The Saints didn’t call again. Benson went to Detroit this week. He interviewed with the Lions. He came home Wednesday night. The Lions haven’t called since. “I truly believe the light’s going to shine brighter than it’s ever shined before,” said Benson, a Midland native who starred four years as a tailback at Texas. “Everything’s not in place for that light to shine.” Benson is 25 years old and jobless as a running back in the NFL. Picked fourth in the 2005 draft, he played three seasons for the Chicago Bears, where he carried the ball 420 times for 1,593 yards and 10 touchdowns. His career at Soldier Field began and ended with controversy. Benson joined the team in preseason camp after a 36-day holdout as a rookie. He signed a five-year contract worth an estimated $17.5 million guaranteed. He injured his ankle. Then, in the span of five weeks earlier this year, Benson was arrested twice for alcohol-related offenses. The Bears released him in June, severing ties with a player Sports Illustrated anointed in 2005 as “an outstanding athlete who gave up a career in baseball, Benson has all the physical skills to be a premier NFL back.” He once was projected as a franchise athlete. Now no such franchise exists. “I never would’ve thought there’d be a d ...

Oh dear Rudi Johnson, where are you? Sorry, feeling a bit nostalgic about the only season in my lifetime that I could watch the Bengals with a winning record, causally drinking a Budweiser (legally). So in 2007, Rudi Johnson had constant hamstring problems, with a dreadful rush-blocking offensive line, and finished the season with 497 yards rushing; averaging 2.9 yards-per-rush. He got stronger, more fit, more 2005-Rudi and the Bengals cut him to save $3.2 million; in which the Bengals have yet to distribute. The plan was to implement Chris Perry as the team's feature back, use Kenny Watson at some point (though finding Watson is harder than infiltrating Area 51), and use DeDe Dorsey to back up both. Watson's been missing even when healthy and Dorsey is on Injured Reserve. The irony here is that Chris Perry has been performing worse than Rudi Johnson, averaging 2.8 yards-per-rush. Woefully worse is that Chris Perry is fumbling footballs, losing momentum and chances for us to win. To say that Perry has been super-disappointing would be an understatement. To say that Perry is a starting feature back in this league, would be lying through my teeth. True, the offensive line truly has issues rush blocking. But to blame them, over Chris Perry, is a lazy argument. The offensive line struggles to block (boy, that's a nice way of saying it) and Perry can't break a tackle; not to mention fumblitis. Let's just say both are horrible, aye-eat ...
