Sacred Heart-Griffin High School’s first principal, Sister Mary Paul McCaughey, has been named superintendent of Chicago’s 256 Catholic Schools, the nation’s largest parochial system, comprising 96,200 students and 5,300 teachers. McCaughey was co-principal of the former all-girls Sacred Heart Academy from 1985 to 1988. When Sacred Heart merged with the all-boys Griffin High School in the fall of 1988, McCaughey became SHG’s first principal. She left SHG in 1991 to pursue theological studies at the University of Chicago. In 1992, McCaughey became principal of Marian Catholic High School in Chicago Heights, a position she held, except for a two-year period, until 2004, when she became president of the school. She began her new job as superintendent of Chicago’s Catholic Schools on July 1. McCaughey replaced Nicholas Wolsonovich, who resigned earlier this year. McCaughey’s 37 years of experience in Catholic education and her fundraising abilities were mentioned as some of her top qualities, according to an Archdiocese of Chicago news release. “Sister Mary Paul has both the professional experience and leadership qualities that are necessary to take responsibility for the future of our Catholic elementary and high Schools,” said Chicago Archbishop Francis Cardinal George. “I am both honored and humbled by Cardinal George’s confidence in appointing me as superintendent of Catholic Schools,” McCaughey said in a statement she released af ...
