Blame it on translation error, but Casio's [TYO:6952] badly-named "Blanview" LCD technology doesn't sound all that interesting. The name belies the fact that the new LCDs have the potential to be a small breakthrough in mobile computing. They're "transmissive," meaning they can pull in exterior light to allow the pixels to be viewable, making them usable without a backlight in bright settings. Casio has today announced a new digital camera model that includes much of the feature set of its existing EXILIM EX-Z200, but in a slightly slimmer body with a touch less resolution, and at a somewhat reduced cost to boot. Casio announces a new firmware update for the Exilim Pro EX-F1 digital camera. Firmware version 1.10 adds the Prerecord Movie function, which permits movie capture to commence 5 seconds before the user actually presses the Movie Button. Prerecord Movie works with all movie modes, including 30 fps Standard movie mode, the 300 fps, 600 fps and 1200 fps High Speed movie modes, and the Full High-Definition movie mode. Casio has just developed the Blanview LCD transmissive panel which does not require the help of backlight when used outdoors, making it a great development for cell phones and portable media players that will be released in the near future. Casio managed to increase the panel's transmittance by approximately 30%, while reducing power consumption for outdoor use by about 50% when compared with its existing model. Not only that, it this new structure is able to take outside light straight into the LCD panel itself, hence doing away with the need for backlighting.
