Chrisi West is a Virginia delegate to the Democratic National Convention who will be blogging for Virginia Politics from Denver. She is from Alexandria, in Fairfax County. The first day of the convention was phenomenal! The day really started after the delegation breakfast meeting, when I was lucky enough to attend the Unconventional Women panel. Female leaders including Sens. Claire McCaskill and Barbara Boxer, and Republican Governor Jane Swift discussed the issue of women in politics. There was a special spin on several of the panels, focusing on women in politics with an entire council of Colorado Girl Scouts in attendance. Chrisi West I came out of the session with a recommended reading list for myself, including Ruth Bader Ginsberg's dissent in the Lily Ledbetter Case, and a book by Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney, "Rumors of Our Progress Are Greatly Exaggerated." Looks like I have some homework to do! ... Source: blog.washingtonpost.com --- 34 days ago
For a while last night, it seemed that Rep. Carolyn Maloney's bill proposing a crackdown on the credit card industry was doomed. Rep. Mike Castle (R-Del.) was pushing an amendment that would kill the bill and substitute a congressional resolution in support of the Federal Reserve's proposal to rein in "unfair and deceptive" credit card practices, such as arbitrarily raising interest rates on outstanding balances. The Fed is still accepting public comments on that proposal. Consumer advocates said such a move would have weakened both Congress' and the Fed's resolve to reform the industry. After much debate, though, Maloney's "Credit Cardholders' Bill of Rights" passed the House Financial Services Committee by a vote of 39 to 27. The New York Democrat will now bring it up for a full House vote. "We overcame a huge hurdle today," Maloney said last night. "This is the first time a congressional committee has ever passed consumer protections for credit cardholders. But, we are not out of the woods just yet." Not surprisingly, the banking industry was up in arms. "In its current form this bill seeks to lock into law restrictions on fundamental risk management activities, the way interest is calculated, and other responsible business practices," said Edward L. Yingling, president and chief executive of the American Bankers Association. "The result will be higher costs for consumers, reduced access to credit for those with an imperfect or ... As originally published on More.com in the blog MORE from the Floor Before I got to Denver, I watched the TV talking heads (mostly men) wonder aloud if Hillary, like some sneaky, skeevy Eve Harrington from All About Eve , would pull a last-minute power grab to disrupt the nomination. Would she go for a roll-call vote in which her delegates would somehow refuse to move over to Obama, unleashing chaos on the floor? What were her motives? Why couldn't she just hand the spoils to the victor and get on with it? Since all's fair in love and politics, I bought the Obama side's frustration. Get the hook, I thought, and get her off the stage. Next! But after spending nearly all of yesterday covering the Hillary Express--first at WomenCount , then at Emily's List , and finally at the Pepsi Center watching her address the convention--I saw that the task of reprogramming Hillary voters is not so simple. At WomenCount, a mostly off the record event, Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney said in her introduction that "Hillary's race was the best of times and the worst of times.... because we saw the dark misogyny of sexist stereotyping ....Women still have more barriers facing them." And Hillary urged the group to "stand up against the pervasive bias we saw in the media." The women in this crowd weren't just voting for a generic Democrat; Hillary speaks to and embodies something powerful and emotional in their own lives: their own decades-long struggl ... Rep. Jerry Nadler , whose primary challenger, Adam Sullivan, was forced to end his campaign due to the fact that he switched his enrollment from blank to Democrat too late to be eligible to run, arguably has nothing to worry about this fall in his hugely Democrat-dominated district . Nadler does have a general election opponent: Grace Lin, who lives in Rep. Carolyn Maloney's district (there's no residency requirement for Congress) and is running on the GOP and Conservative lines (she was tossed off the Indy line due to cover sheet errors). But in 2006, Nadler won 108,536 votes to the 17,413 received by his GOP opponent and 1,673 by his Conservative challenger. But that's not stopping him from raising campaign cash. Nadler has a low-dollar ($40-a-head) "bash" tomorrow at the Boat Basin Cafe - the invite to which reads "Tie One On with Congressman Jerry Nadler." Also listed: Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer, senators Tom Duane and Eric Schneiderman, assembly members Richard Gottfried, Danny O'Donnell and Linda Rosenthal and Councilwoman Gale Brewer. Sullivan was formally removed from the ballot last week. Nadler was represented by election law attorney Jerry Goldfeder, who left AG Andrew Cuomo's office and is now at Stroock, Stroock & Lavan . As of the end of June, Nadler had $1.24 million on hand and no campaign debt. Nadler's Chief of Staff Amy Rutkin noted that, opponents or no, the congressman is always raising money f ... I had hoped the panel discussion "Culture Wars" would track classical liberal/conservative Kulturkampf issues, establish once and for all that everywhere there's freaks and hairies, dykes and fairies, and possibly tell me where is sanity. As it turned out, panelists Gov. Bill Richardson (D-N.M.), Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.), former Rep. Harold Ford Jr. (D-Tenn.), Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-N.Y.), MSNBC personality Tucker Carlson, Daily Kos founder Markos Moulitas, former White House spokeswoman DeeDee Mers, Newsweek's Richard Wolffe, and host Dan Abrams spent the whole time talking about racism, feminism and the Hillary/Barack contretemps. But it was an interesting exchange anyway, as much for the interesting divides it revealed in people's thinking as for the way it demonstrated how party interests take precedence over even issues these people actually care a lot about. Tucker Carlson was there to be the turd in the liberal Democrat punchbowl, and did his usual bangup job of boisterous contrarity. Soon after he suggested that Obama could win in a landslide if he pledged to end affirmative action, Kos or Klobuchar (I forget) told the crowd to be wary of listening to Republicans who offer advice, because "they do not have our best interests at heart." That's part of the "party interests" piece I mentioned above and will return to in a moment: How cramped a definition of "best interests" can you have if in practice it means ignoring ... A bill, HR 6548, that would honor the women of this nation has been introduced in the House of Representatives. It will provide a vacant lot for use by the National Women's History Museum (NWHM). Not enough is known about women's history - little is taught in the classroom and little is found in public places such as museums or memorials. Men have hundreds of years of their history to reflect upon and use for inspiration. Women do not! Support HR 6548. Representative Carolyn B. Maloney (D-NY) introduced H.R. 6548 with bipartisan support on July 17, 2008. Now, we've launched the Right Here. Right Now. campaign so that you can make your voice heard on Capitol Hill. Although it sometimes seems like 30-year incumbent State Senator Marty Connor is playing the underdog role in his race against young, Schumer-backed challenger Dan Squadron, Connor certainly has his share of establishment backing . And here's more! On Monday, a number of members of Congress will endorse Connor at City Hall. A release promises Carolyn Maloney, Jerrold Nadler and Nydia Velázquez at a press conference, as well as the possibility of Yvette Clarke, and the endorsement of Ed Towns, although he won't be able to make it.
