Charles Busch's attempt to create an evening of screwball entertainment is long on the former and short on the latter. LA JOLLA -- Imagine Joan Crawford's stately glamour, Susan Hayward's tough-broad shtick and Carol Burnett's parodic flair all rolled into the same male actor. Now that it has been confirmed that Rosie O'Donnell is returning to TV with a one-hour variety special on NBC, could she also be making another appearance in the Emmy race? Airing Thanksgiving eve, this showcase of variety of acts with Rosie O'Donnell as ringmaster will serve as a backdoor pilot for a regular series. Assuming that it is not a turkey, O'Donnell — who will be exec producing as well — could land another prime-time Emmy Award to join the one she won in 1999 for co-producing the Tony Awards, winner of best variety, musical or comedy special. Though she did not pick up a nod for hosting that kudoscast, Rosie O'Donnell did compete for the individual performance in a variety program back in 1995 for her first HBO comedy special. Though she lost, given that it was to her childhood idol Barbra Streisand, one can assume she was happy just to be nominated. For her daytime talker, O'Donnell won six consecutive daytime Emmy Awards for hosting (1997-2002) and another five (1998-2002) for producing. Since then, this mercurial talent has bounced around, landing for a controversy-filled season on "The View" and making headlines with incendiary postings on her own blog. Now, with a kinder, gentler O'Donnell in the offing — she promises "old-time variety, live from New York with a nod to Ed Sullivan, Carol Burnett and memories of Sonny and Cher" — she could well win over Emmy voters again. As tipped by Sun-Times celebrity columnist Bill Zwecker back in July, Rosie O'Donnell is indeed returning to TV as host of a variety show for NBC. NBC will air ''Rosie's Variety Show'' as an hourlong live special the night before Thanksgiving, with an eye toward expansion to a full series order should viewers embrace the project. The special will feature celebrity guests, musical acts, comedy skits and a prize giveaway for the show's in-studio and home audiences. David Friedman (''Last Call With Carson Daly'') has been tapped to executive produce along with O'Donnell. It's apparently meant to be a updated revival of the old Ed Sullivan show, with comedy skits reminiscent of those on Carol Burnett's long-running variety show. According to Zwecker's original report, "her new NBC bosses have made it very clear -- this will be strictly about entertainment. No politics." The closest modern variation of the variety show that has drawn significant viewers has been NBC's ''America's Got Talent.'' The show's Nov. 26 premiere date manages to trump Fox's upcoming Osbourne family variety show, which is expected to debut in the winter or spring. Contributing: The Hollywood Reporter ... What a political scandal feels like to a staffer--current, former or "it's complicated"--is an awful lot like grief. There are stages. There is the initial chaos where the stories appear fast and furious like punches only Palin, Craig, Vitter, Foley, Spitzer, and Clinton, etc staffers can understand. Each story about John Edwards's affair and cover-up is a bruising and makes you hope that the truth is on the way so they stop and you can get back to work. There is the stage of denial. John said it was all lies before he and the lawyers even released statements. Maybe he's being quiet because he's building a liable case like Carol Burnett won against the National Enquirer ? If he's still calling to discuss the convention speech, that must mean something. There is anger. Did he really pay her that much while so many worked longer hours for much less? Did they really put out those statements? Did I just watch "When Animals Attack 2 and 3" in order to avoid picking up the phone? There is also a stage of dark humor. How can there not be with this cast of characters: a friend named Pigeon, the Sisters Druck, a father linked to insurance fraud by having a horse electrocuted, a spiritual advisor described as an "intuitive" (clearly, still working on his craft.), the website Being is Free (thank you Deceiver.com), a rumored vasectomy, a family moved across the country so they can all live in a house right out of a script from "Big Love," a ...
