Tacos Guadalajara 217 Atlantic St. Stamford, CT, 06901 203-324-2204 Website/Menu As some readers may know I am from California and have been on a fairly fruitless quest to find a decent Carnitas burritto around Stamford. The other day I was in need of some quick food, so I grabbed a $1 frozen, Carnitas chimichanga at the drugstore, and microwaved it when I got home. Here’s a picture: I added the salsa myself, obviously. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the chimichanga. Although not outstanding, it was a hell of [...] ...

Honoring low-rent high style: "Cocinando Carnitas" by Hugo Ludeña, via Greg Kucera Gallery In a rundown backyard in Seattle, a chef prepares for a party. Were it not for the scale of his efforts, he might be in hobo camp cooking soup in a can, but that kind of solitary life has nothing to do with this solitary man. ...

La Superior. Photo: Hannah Whitaker/New York Magazine Today the magazine outs an undersung charmer, La Superior (a spartan taqueria that deserves its name thanks to its gorditas, quesadillas, and a Carnitas sandwich that may be the city's first "Mexican French Dip"), as well as bringing some much-awaited details on a few projects we've been obsessing over. Finally, we get a look into the kitchen and wine cellar of Café Select — it’ll open for lunch this week with what might be the city’s first Alpine wine list, and a modern Swiss menu by Jo Herde. Likewise, we've puzzled over Five Leaves' lovely interior and its association with Heath Ledger, but Rob and Robin reveal that a Prune alum is at work in the kitchen. Hard details, also, on that Brooklyn whiskey bar, Char No. 4, and on the much-awaited Italian mozzarella bar, Obikà. And news of Double Crown’s “inner sanctum,” a wine and cocktail bar called Madame Geneva. The Robs also find time to pick out their favorite BLTs, and match the list with a recipe from Tien Ho of Momofuku Ssäm . Should you want to add cheese to the latter, there’s also a rundown of domestic (and local) purveyors of mozzarella di bufala and burrata. Just don’t count on Jefferson Market to carry it — an Intel item reveals that the store is cash-strapped and can’t afford to restock items. But here’s some good news: The Four Seasons is starting breakfast service in January, and Gael Greene uncovers the “best paella” i ...

Southern California's taco truck war continued to sizzle as county officials asked a judge to reinstate a law he threw out last month that had forced truck operators to move every hour or face the threat of jail. County officials say the trucks, many of which have become the equivalent of neighborhood restaurants, are a nuisance, parking at the same spot every day and bringing in noise and traffic. Operators respond that they meet the same health standards as restaurants and are being unfairly targeted because of organized political pressure from restaurateurs. At stake is unfettered access to cheap, to-go Mexican food like Carnitas, quesadillas and carne asada tacos that are cooked to order and served from literally thousands of elaborate restaurant-trucks that dot the business streets in unincorporated areas of Los Angeles County, particularly in largely Hispanic East Los Angeles, where trucks can be found on almost every block. "All there is to say right now is that we have filed a motion for reconsideration, requesting that the court reconsider its previous ruling," said Deputy District Attorney Steven Gates. He declined to discuss the basis of Monday's appeal but said the county requested a hearing Sept. 19. "We will definitely oppose," said attorney Philip C. Greenwald, who represents the taco truck drivers. ...

So much to eat... Serious Eats' Adam Kuban came across this list called The Omnivore's 100—a quirky run-down of foods that every omnivore should try at least once—everything from bagels and lox to whole bugs and Hostess fruit pies. Very Good Taste , the UK-based blog that came up with the idea, asks that other bloggers copy the list, bolding the items you've eaten and crossing out the items you wouldn't consider eating. Fun stuff. Lists beget more lists, so I thought I'd put together a Traveling Omnivore's 20: A run-down of my 20 top, must-have, location-specific eats. I've bolded the ones I've tried. What would you add? What have you tried? 1. Assam laksa in Singapore 2. Barbecued brisket in Texas 3. Uni sushi in Tokyo 4. Fried fish tacos in Ensenada, Baja Mexico 5. Pav Bhaji in Bombay 6. Stuffed quahogs on Cape Cod 7. Wine in Sonoma Valley 8. Beef rendang in Indonesia 9. Pizza in New York 10. Grilled steak in Argentina 11. Boudin noir in Paris 12. Fried oyster po'boy in New Orleans 13. Banh beo in Vietnam 14. Braaied game in South Africa 15. Prawn curry in Goa 16. Hot pot in Szechuan province 17. A Carnitas taco from a taco truck in LA 18. Jerked chicken in Jamaica 19. Barbecued burnt ends in Kansas City 20. Single-malt scotch in Scotland ...

The last time I visited Houston, I arrived at midnight. I was exhausted, but my mom was waiting for me with a to-go container filled with my favorite restaurant dish: enchiladas verdes—corn tortillas wrapped around crisp, juicy cubes of Carnitas, dressed with a green salsa thick with avocados, tomatillos, cilantro and onions. And while it’s not the most traditional of Tex-Mex dishes, it’s what I often crave as there is no finer combination of flavors than salty sweet pork paired with tart tomatillos. Carnitas, which means little meats in Spanish, come in several guises. Some people serve it stringy, like pulled pork. Some people serve it in huge chunks, with bits of bone still attached. And some serve it in smaller cubes, perfect for popping in your mouth. Though no matter how it’s presented, it’s always succulent slow-cooked pork that’s tender on the inside and crunchy on the out. The state of Michoaca, Mexico is renowned for its Carnitas. And for good reason—they cook huge hunks of pork shoulder in oversized copper pots filled with lard. It’s a decadent eating experience as the pork is slick and smooth with just enough texture to keep things interesting. Of course, after eating Michoacan Carnitas you immediately fall into a pork-fat coma and can’t get up for days . I adore the Michoacan Carnitas and have even made them a couple of times when I have had pounds of lard on hand. This past weekend, however, I was a bit short on pig fat an ...

It seems Ms. Steffans who is known by her stage moniker Superhead, is a successful video ho who dated Ja Rule, Ice T, Shaquille O'Neil and Usher before ending up with Eddie Winslow.
