Part of the genius of the James Bond franchise is that it almost never takes itself too seriously. Like the films, Jack White and Alicia Keys ' theme song for the latest Bond pic winks at its own conventions even as it celebrates them. Although groups like A-Ha, Duran Duran, and Garbage have performed Bond themes, the most famous have tended to be by individual artists, either a woman (Nancy Sinatra, Shirley Bassey, Carly Simon, Madonna, Tina Turner) or a man (Paul McCartney, Louis Armstrong, Tom Jones, Chris Cornell). In Keys and White, "Another Way to Die" has both, neatly combining the R&B singer's delicate, suspenseful piano and the rocker's crunching guitars in the bargain. The orchestration hearkens back to McCartney's similarly titled "Live and Let Die", while the verses have the near-spoken cadence of John Lennon singing about lizards and windowpanes on "Happiness Is a Warm Gun". The video doesn't have much memorable to add, however, interspersing some vintage Bond silhouette motifs as an elegantly dressed Keys and White (what, his tie's untied? Those wacky indie kids!) perform in a barren desert and a bare studio. The two eventually trade solos, Keys via scat and White on his guitar, as something like electricity swirls and other expensive-looking computer effects encircle them. The sun rises, and another guy who isn't Sean Connery appears. I'm not particularly shaken or stirred by the clip, but the music works for me. [f ... Source: www.kentucky.com --- 9 days ago
What is it like to grow up surrounded by song? From his famous parents to the company of his sister Sally, who is a singer-songwriter, too, Ben Taylor has been gently rocked into this world, sonic-wise, by music knit right at home and sounds from the world of music that makes its way into one's home. Mos Def, The Roots, David Bowie - to name but a few more influences - have helped shaped Ben's musical point of view. Born to James Taylor and Carly Simon and nourished by Martha's Vineyard, Ben Taylor answered 20 Questions before the tour to promote his new album, "The Legend of Kung Folk Part 1 (The Killing Bite)," released Sept. 16, began. 1. The latest book or movie that made you cry? "The Unbearable Lightness of Being" by Milan Kundera. In the end,it's surrendering to being sensitive and human, and that makes me cry. 2. Yep, Mai-Mai has a couple of achers, poor thing. Double ear infections, the scourge of the toddler brigade. She was pretty miserable last night. She was doing better this morning, until I tried to administer her meds, a gelatinous Creamsiclian goo, and she Linda Blaired all over me. Quite an impressive heave actually. In fact, this family has been doing a lot of first-class barfing lately. But I digress...This would be a perfect day to, let's say, get ready for a 5-day trip to Cleveland, interview Tony Bennett, review the new Bob Dylan bootlegs and basically try to get my life back in order. But no, now I have to go do the kid's eardrops. She's gonna see these suckers coming a mile away. She's crafty, just like her sis, just like her mama. I'm outmatched. In the meantime, why don't we hone our playlist chops. (I've been getting nagged about playlists lately, especially from my work peeps. What happened to that whimsical Pop Life pasttime, they ask. Good question.) While I go do battle with a ferocious 8-month-old, let's see what you can do. Carly Simon did question the idea of using a performance profile as a means to determine competency in her hit song, You’re So Vain. However, in this case I’m referring to the other Carly. Gary Robinson is a Superman fan who, like many of us, has lived with the Man of Steel for as long as he can remember. Gary is writing a series of articles about Superman in his life, and the Superman Homepage is pleased to publish them here for something different... a change of pace. 3. The Super-Family from Kentucky - Part 2 By Gary Robinson Even the mightiest heroes have their weakness. Samson's was women. Superman's is the radiation from fragments of his home world. Homer Robinson's was the steady barrage of his son's yapping for a funnybook all morning. Of all our family's regular activities, my favorite was going to Tradewell supermarket in Chesapeake, Ohio, for groceries. The particular attraction there was the wooden periodical rack just the other side of the checkout counters. It was an excellent location for me. My parents would start shopping at the other end of the store, working their way up and down the aisles. At the end of their course they'd rendezvous with me. In between, I had plenty of time to peruse the colorful array of titles from several companies: Dell, ACG, Gold Key, Harvey, Archie, the newly branded Marvel Comics, and, of course, DC Superman National Comics. As Mother and Daddy began their search for bread and meat, I sprang into Action - not to mention Adventure, World's Finest, Superman's Girl Friend, Lois Lane, and Superman's Pal, Jimmy Olsen. I can hear young Carly Simon singing in the background, "A ... Source: www.tv3.co.nz --- 25 days ago
